The Marmore Falls run on a timetable: the water is released in set windows that change month by month, and on weekdays in January, February, November and December it is not released at all.

## The release windows, and the months with none

This is the fact that decides the visit, and almost nobody puts it first. In August the water runs every day from 10:00 to 19:00 and again from 21:00 to 22:00. In the four winter months it runs only at weekends, in two one hour windows, and on weekdays it does not run.

| 2026 | Weekdays | Saturday and Sunday |
|---|---|---|
| January, February, December | no release | 12:00-13:00, 14:00-15:00 |
| November | no release | 12:00-13:00, 15:00-16:00 |
| August | 10:00-19:00, 21:00-22:00 | 10:00-19:00, 21:00-22:00 |

The months in between sit between those two extremes and change from one to the next, which is why the park asks visitors to check its calendar close to the date. The warning is on its own page, in capitals, and it is worth repeating here: these times can be changed.

## The park hours are a separate timetable

The gates and the water are two different clocks, and confusing them is how people end up inside a park with nothing falling. On winter weekdays the park opens from 10:00 to 16:30, at winter weekends from 10:00 to 17:00, and in August every day from 09:00 to 22:30.

Read them together. A January weekday gives you six and a half hours of open park and no water at all; an August evening gives you a release until 22:00 with the park still open. Whether the fall is lit after dark is not published anywhere we could read, so this page does not say that it is.

## The price says the same thing more honestly than any sentence

The full ticket is 12 euros from age 10, and 10 euros for children between 5 and 9 and visitors over 70. On winter days with no release it is 6 euros, half price, set by the people who run the site.

A group of 15 or more pays 10 euros each plus a 15% booking fee, an Umbria Green Card is 8 euros, and the shuttle inside the park is 4 euros. Prices are in euros and apply in 2026.

That halved ticket is the clearest statement anyone makes about what you see on a day with no water: the gorge, the paths and the viewpoints, but not a waterfall.

## Roman engineering, and a power station

The falls are not natural: the Romans cut the Curiano channel in 271 BC to drain the stagnant waters of the Velino from the plain of Rieti into the Nera below, and the 165 metre drop over three steps is what that work produced.

The timetable is the modern half of the same story: the water that is not falling is running a hydroelectric plant. A fall that a Roman consul ordered and an engineer still switches on is a rarer thing than a natural cascade, and it is the reason this page opens with a clock rather than a photograph.

What is not here: the 2027 calendar, which the park has not published yet, and a straight comparison between the upper and lower viewpoints in terms of parking and walking time, which no official page sets out in one place.

The region around it is [Umbria](/regions/umbria), and the story of the channel is in [the waterfall Rome built](/stories/the-waterfall-rome-built).

In set windows that change month by month. In August the water runs daily from 10:00 to 19:00 and from 21:00 to 22:00. In January, February, November and December there is no release on weekdays at all, and at weekends only two one hour windows.

### Is it worth going when the water is off?

The park itself answers that with its price list: on winter days without a release the ticket costs 6 euros instead of the standard 12. The paths and the viewpoints are open, the 165 metre fall is not running.

### How much does the Marmore Falls cost in 2026?

12 euros full price from age 10, 10 euros reduced for children aged 5 to 9 and visitors over 70, 6 euros on winter days with no water release. Groups of 15 or more pay 10 euros plus a 15% booking fee, Umbria Green Card holders 8 euros, and the internal shuttle is 4 euros.

### What are the opening hours of the park?

They follow the season. On winter weekdays the park is open from 10:00 to 16:30 and at weekends from 10:00 to 17:00; in August it opens every day from 09:00 to 22:30. The hours in between change month by month, so check the park's own calendar close to your visit.

### Are the Marmore Falls natural?

No. The Romans cut the Curiano channel in 271 BC to drain the stagnant waters of the Velino into the Nera below, and the 165 metre drop over three steps is the result. Today the same water runs a hydroelectric plant, which is why it is released on a timetable.

| La Cascata delle Marmore, alta 165 metri su tre salti, non e' naturale: la crearono i Romani nel 271 a.C. scavando il canale Curiano per far defluire nel fiume Nera le acque stagnanti del Velino nella piana reatina.
