Crespi d'Adda, a hamlet of Capriate San Gervasio in the province of Bergamo, has been on the UNESCO list since 1995 as an exceptional example of a 19th and early 20th century workers' village that survives substantially intact.

## UNESCO since 1995, criteria (iv) and (v)

Crespi d'Adda was inscribed in 1995 under criteria (iv) and (v), as a workers' village of the 19th and early 20th century that survives substantially intact.

The village was founded by the industrialist Cristoforo Benigno Crespi and enlarged by his son Silvio. What makes it a listing rather than a factory is everything around the mill.

## Houses, school, clinic, theater, free power

The village has multi-family houses with kitchen gardens, a clinic, a school, a theater, a church, the owners' castle and a hydroelectric plant that supplied free electricity.

That list is the argument. A family that owned the jobs also owned the housing, the schooling, the medicine, the evenings out and the light in the kitchen, and built their own castle in the same place. The social contract of a company town is written in that list of buildings.

The longer read on what that meant for the people inside it is at [a company town on the UNESCO list](/stories/a-company-town-on-the-unesco-list).

## No visiting hours are published

No visiting hours are published in the sources checked for this page, and no tour prices either (2026).

Crespi is a hamlet of a working comune, so walking through it does not depend on a ticket desk. Getting inside the church, the theater or the castle is another matter, and that is a question for the local tourist office in Capriate San Gervasio before you set the day.

## Lombardy's 10 sites, and 8,000 years of rock art

Lombardy hosts 10 of Italy's 62 UNESCO sites, more than any other region, with Tuscany and Veneto next on 9 each (2026). Four of the ten are serial sites shared with other regions.

At the far end of the same list sits the rock art of Valcamonica, inscribed in 1979 under criteria (iii) and (vi): more than 140,000 carved symbols and figures across more than 8,000 years, on a property of 432.3 hectares with a buffer zone of 1,018.23.

The two are the widest span Lombardy's list offers. Valcamonica records eight millennia of people carving rock; Crespi records one family's industrial project.

1979 was the year of Italy's first round of inscriptions, but the source does not say Valcamonica was the first Italian site, so that claim is not made here. The rest is at [Lombardy](/regions/lombardia) and [UNESCO sites in Lombardy](/unesco/in-lombardia).
