The Museo storico della campana in Agnone, beside the Pontificia Fonderia Marinelli, is visited only on booked guided tours at 12 pm and 4 pm, for €9 full or €5 for ages 6 to 18 (2026).

## Two tours a day, booking required

Tours start at 12 pm and 4 pm, the museum is seen only on them, and booking is compulsory. Those are the ordinary times; in August there are four, at 11 am, 12 pm, 4 pm and 5 pm (2026). A tour lasts about an hour.

The museum closes on Sunday afternoon, so on a Sunday the 12 pm tour is the only one. Arriving without a booking means finding the door closed.

It stands at Via Felice D'Onofrio 14, opened in 1997, and is named after John Paul II.

## €9 full, €5 for ages 6 to 18

The full ticket is €9 and ages 6 to 18 pay €5, with free entry for preschool children (2026).

For a family of four with two teenagers that comes to €28. The price is the same whichever of the daily tours you book.

## No founding year is published

No founding year is published on the foundry's official site. It says only that the Pontificia Fonderia Marinelli is the oldest foundry in Italy and among the oldest in the world, and that it has worked in Agnone since the Middle Ages.

The years 1000 and 1040 appear in plenty of articles. Neither has a primary source behind it, so neither is given here as a date. The foundry's age is real; the precise year is a story that has been repeated until it looks like a record. The foundry itself is at [Fonderia di Agnone](/food/producers/fonderia-di-agnone).

## Molise has no World Heritage site

Molise and Valle d'Aosta are the only two Italian regions with no UNESCO World Heritage site (2026).

What Molise does share is on another list. Transhumance, the seasonal moving of flocks, was inscribed in 2019 on UNESCO's Representative List of intangible heritage, on a joint bid by Italy, Austria and Greece, and extended in 2023 to ten states. In Italy it is practiced along the tratturi, the grass droving roads.

Why two regions ended up with nothing is at [the two regions with no UNESCO site](/stories/the-two-regions-with-no-unesco-site).

## The tratturo at Saepinum

The Pescasseroli-Candela tratturo, one of the great grass roads of transhumance, crosses the Roman site of Altilia-Saepinum at Sepino, and the Roman town was founded at the very crossing of the tratturo and the road from the Matese massif to the Tammaro plain.

It is the clearest place in Molise to see what a tratturo is: a road that was there before the town and decided where the town went. The lengths of the Molise tratturi are not verified on an official source, so none is quoted.
