Palmanova was founded by the Republic of Venice in 1593 and is the only fortress town still intact in the shape of a nine-pointed star, with more than four kilometers of ramparts you can walk without a ticket.

## Nine points, three rings, one plan

Three concentric enceintes surround the town: two Venetian, with nine bastions and nine ravelins, and one Napoleonic from the early 19th century with nine lunettes. The number nine is not decorative, it is the geometry that lets each face be covered by fire from two others.

The plan covered 70 hectares for a population of 20,000. The town never reached that figure, which is why the hexagonal Piazza Grande and the radial streets feel oversized for the place they serve.

Everything visible from the square is a diagram you are standing inside. That is what has kept the shape legible for four centuries: nothing was ever built over it.

## National monument in 1960, World Heritage in 2017

Palmanova has been a national monument since 1960 and a World Heritage site since July 9, 2017, as part of Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th centuries: Stato da Terra and western Stato da Mar.

That serial property runs across three Italian regions, Lombardy, Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and the Italian components are Bergamo, Peschiera del Garda and Palmanova. Venice built the same military system along its whole land and sea border, and the list treats it as one thing.

## No ticket, and no gate

Nothing is charged for the town. The ramparts, over four kilometers of them, the square and the streets are public ground you walk into, and there is no opening time to miss.

Museums inside the walls set their own hours and prices, and this page carries none because none appear on the sources we read. Treat Palmanova itself as free and budget only for what you choose to go inside.

## Cividale, the other Friulian listing

Cividale del Friuli became a World Heritage site on June 25, 2011 inside the serial property The Longobards in Italy. Places of Power, 568 to 774 AD, which gathers seven Italian locations: Cividale, Brescia, Castelseprio, Campello sul Clitunno, Spoleto, Benevento and Monte Sant'Angelo.

The Cividale component is the Gastaldaga area with the Tempietto Longobardo and the monastery of Santa Maria in Valle, plus the remains of the episcopal complex. Opening runs 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, at via Monastero Maggiore 34, ticketed through Vivaticket.

Nobody publishes the fares on that page, and the hours carry no stated season of validity. Both gaps are worth a phone call before a detour.

## Two ways of building a border

Palmanova and Cividale belong to two different empires' answers to the same ground. One is a Lombard capital of the 8th century, the other a Venetian machine of the 16th, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia holds both because the frontier never moved far from here.

Neither is on the standard route through the region, which is the reason both stay quiet in August. The region page is at [Friuli-Venezia Giulia](/regions/friuli-venezia-giulia).

## FAQ

### Why is Palmanova a star?

Because Venice built it as a frontier fortress in 1593, and a nine-pointed star gives every wall a covering line of fire. It is the only founded town still intact in that shape, with nine bastions and nine ravelins in the Venetian rings.

### Is Palmanova a UNESCO site?

Yes, since July 9, 2017, inside the serial property Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th centuries. The Italian components are Bergamo, Peschiera del Garda and Palmanova, and the property spans three regions.

### Do you pay to visit Palmanova?

No ticket is needed for the town itself. The hexagonal Piazza Grande, the radial streets and more than 4 km of walkable ramparts are public ground. Individual museums inside the walls set their own hours and prices.

### How many people was Palmanova built for?

20,000, on a plan of 70 hectares, and it never got near that. The population it was designed for is the reason the streets are so wide and the square so large for a town of its actual size.

### What is the Tempietto Longobardo in Cividale?

The core of Cividale's World Heritage listing of June 25, 2011, inside the Gastaldaga area with the monastery of Santa Maria in Valle. Opening is 10 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm, ticketed through Vivaticket, with no fares published on the page we read.
