San Gimignano sells no single tickets for its main monuments: there is one San Gimignano Pass at €15, valid three days across four sites, and it is the only way to climb the Torre Grossa.

## One pass, four sites, three days

The pass is €15 full and €12 for ages 6 to 17 (2026), with €1 added if you book ahead. It runs three days from first use.

Four places are on it: the Collegiata complex, the Palazzo Comunale with the Pinacoteca and the Torre Grossa, the Santa Chiara complex and the church of San Lorenzo in Ponte. Prices on this page are in euros.

The format removes a decision most Tuscan towns leave you. You cannot pay less to see one thing, and you cannot pay more to skip anything, which is worth knowing before you build a two-hour stop between Siena and Florence.

## The only tower you can climb

The Torre Grossa is the single climbable tower in San Gimignano, reached through the Palazzo Comunale, and it is sold only inside the pass. No separate ticket exists for the climb.

That is the clause that decides the purchase for most people. If the tower is the reason you came, the €15 is not optional and there is no cheaper route to the top.

## 14 towers out of about 72

Fourteen towers survive of about 72 built between the 11th and the 13th century by merchant families, who raised them as a display of wealth and power rather than for defense. Roughly a fifth of the skyline is still standing.

The rest came down over centuries of ordinary reuse, not in one catastrophe. What makes the town legible is that the survivors are scattered rather than grouped: you read the density from the gaps.

## 13.88 hectares of World Heritage

The historic center has been on the World Heritage list since 1990 under criteria i, iii and iv, across 13.88 hectares. That is one of the smallest inscribed areas in Italy.

Small core zones concentrate everything. The listed part is the walled town and nothing else, so the entire visitor load of a famous listing lands inside fourteen hectares between ten in the morning and four in the afternoon.

Come early or stay the night. The day-trip window is the problem, not the number of visitors in the year.

## Pienza is smaller still, and answers a different question

Pienza's historic center was inscribed in 1996 under criteria i, ii and iv across just 4.41 hectares, after Pope Pius II had his birthplace redesigned from 1459 by Bernardo Rossellino, a pupil of Leon Battista Alberti, with about 40 buildings built or rebuilt.

The two towns are opposites on the same list. San Gimignano is medieval accumulation left standing; Pienza is the first built application of the Renaissance idea of the ideal city, made in one campaign by one patron.
