Climbing the Leaning Tower costs €20 with no reduction of any kind, and children under 8 are not allowed up at all (2026).

## Under 8, and the calendar year catch

Children below 8 cannot climb. It is a safety ban, not a recommendation, and it is enforced at the door with a document if the staff ask for one.

The catch is how the age is counted: 8 years reached or to be reached during the current year. A child of 7 who turns 8 in December can climb in January of that same year.

That single detail decides family trips, and almost no reseller states it.

## 8 to 12 by the hand, under 18 with an adult

Children aged 8 to 12 must be held by the hand by an adult for the entire visit, and every visitor under 18 has to be accompanied.

Read that literally before you buy 4 tickets for 2 adults and 2 nine-year-olds. One hand each, on a spiral staircase, for 30 minutes.

The climb is also not advised for anyone with heart, circulatory or mobility conditions, and there is no alternative route up.

## €20 flat, and that is the whole tariff

The ticket costs €20 in 2026, set by the Opera della Primaziale Pisana, with no reductions at all: not for children, not for students, not for school groups. Prices are in euros.

This is unusual in Italy, where the €2 rate for EU citizens aged 18 to 25 is close to standard. Here it does not exist, and a site quoting you a child rate for the tower is quoting something that is not real.

Both the operator and the culture ministry confirm the figure.

## The 1 free entry, and its 5 days notice

Free admission exists for a visitor with a disability together with a companion, and it has 2 conditions: booking by email to accessibility@opapisa.it at least 5 days in advance, and a restricted range of time slots.

Those slots are before 10 am and after 6 pm, 5 pm or 4 pm depending on the closing time of the season.

Five days is a real lead time. It has to be arranged before you leave home, not on the morning you arrive in Pisa.

## 251 steps of the 294, in 30 minutes

The internal staircase has 294 steps, of which 251 take you to the top, and the visit lasts 30 minutes.

The 30 minutes is the slot, not the climb. It covers going up, standing at the top and coming down, on a stair that narrows and tilts with the building.

## 56 meters, 3.97 degrees, 14,453 tonnes

The bell tower stands 56 meters above ground, 58.36 meters measured from the foundation, and weighs 14,453 tonnes, leaning 3.97 degrees off vertical.

Work started in August 1173 and finished in the 14th century, with the lean already present in the first phases of the site. Bonanno Pisano is linked to the foundation and Giovanni di Simone to the bell chamber.

The angle changes slowly as stabilization work continues, so 3.97 degrees is a reading with a date attached rather than a constant.

## The other tickets last a whole year

The tower ticket is timed, with the slot chosen at purchase, and the 4 other monuments on the Piazza dei Miracoli work differently: tickets for the Baptistery, the Camposanto, the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo and the Museo delle Sinopie are valid for 1 year from the date you pick, with no hour on them.

Entry closes 30 minutes before the monuments shut, every day.

That annual validity is a genuinely useful rule and it is almost never mentioned by resellers: buy in April, come back in October, same ticket. For the region, see [Toscana](/regions/toscana).

## FAQ
