The 1994 listing called The city of Vicenza and the Palladian villas of the Veneto covers Vicenza and 24 villas across 333.87 hectares, and it is a serial site of private houses with no shared ticket.

## 333.87 hectares, one city and 24 houses

The property was inscribed in 1994 under criteria i and ii and spreads over 333.87 hectares as a serial site: the city of Vicenza plus twenty-four villas scattered across the Veneto.

Scattered is the operative word. This is not a route with signposts between stops, it is a set of separate addresses in several provinces, and any itinerary through it is one you assemble yourself.

## The list is rewarding influence, not beauty

Three centuries of Palladianism are what the two criteria are pointing at, rather than the beauty of any single house. Andrea Palladio's work generated a movement that turned up in English country houses, Irish public buildings, Russian palaces and the state capitols of the United States.

That is unusual for an Italian listing. Most reward what stands on the ground; this one rewards a template that traveled, and the villas are the surviving originals of a form copied everywhere else.

## What the record does not say

One date is missing from the ministerial page we read: the villas were in fact added by an extension, since the 1994 inscription covered Vicenza and three suburban villas. The extension is not stated on the source, so this page records only the year of inscription.

That is worth knowing if you are citing the figure of 24. It is the current count, not the count of 1994, and the official Italian page does not explain the difference.

## No timetable, and most of them are homes

Nobody publishes a joint timetable or a common ticket for the villas. Each one sets its own opening days, its own price and its own season, and several are lived in, which is why some open a handful of afternoons a year.

Build the route around the two or three that are reliably open on your dates, then treat any other as a bonus. Vicenza itself is the fixed point: the city is walkable and its Palladian buildings are public.

## Nine sites in one region

The Veneto holds 9 of the 62 Italian World Heritage properties in 2026, from Venice and its lagoon in 1987 to the Prosecco hills in 2019. The Palladian listing is the only one of those nine made mostly of private houses.

That composition explains the access problem. A city, a lagoon, a botanical garden and a mountain range can publish hours; two dozen family properties cannot agree on any.

## The Prosecco hills, and the trick with the poles

The hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene in the province of Treviso have been a World Heritage cultural landscape since 2019. Their distinguishing feature is the ciglioni: small vineyards on narrow grassy terraces held without dry stone walls, alternating with woods, hedges, tree corridors and scattered villages.

Look up and you may see the bellussera, a training system devised by the Bellussi brothers at the end of the 19th century against downy mildew, with wooden poles 3 to 4 meters high and crossed wires that draw a honeycomb grid over the slope.

The number of municipalities in the inscribed area and its surface are not stated on the official pages, so neither appears here. The region is at [Veneto](/regions/veneto).

## FAQ

### How many Palladian villas are on the UNESCO list?

Twenty-four, together with the city of Vicenza, in a serial property inscribed in 1994 under criteria i and ii covering 333.87 hectares. The villas are scattered across the Veneto rather than grouped in one valley.

### Is there one ticket for the Palladian villas?

No. Each villa sets its own opening days and its own admission, and several are private homes that open on limited dates. No shared timetable or joint ticket is published, so a villa route has to be built villa by villa.

### Why is Palladio on the World Heritage list?

For influence rather than for beauty. His work produced Palladianism, an architectural movement that ran for three centuries and reached England, Ireland, Russia and the United States, which is what criteria i and ii are recognizing.

### What are the ciglioni in the Prosecco hills?

Small vineyards on narrow grassy terraces held without dry stone walls, alternating with woods and villages. They are the distinguishing feature of the Conegliano and Valdobbiadene hills, a cultural landscape inscribed in 2019 in the province of Treviso.

### How many UNESCO sites are there in the Veneto?

Nine in 2026, from Venice and its lagoon, inscribed in 1987, to the Prosecco hills of 2019. The Palladian listing of 1994 is one of them, and it is the only one that is mostly made of privately owned houses.
