# Free first Sunday: the 299 sites it applies to

The first Sunday of every month is free at Italian state cultural sites, which in practice means the 299 institutions that charge admission out of the 453 surveyed in 2024, and excludes three entire regions.

## The criterion: state-run, charging, and inside the ministry survey

A site qualifies for the free first Sunday if it is a state cultural institution: a monument, museum, gallery, archaeological excavation, park or monumental garden run by the Ministry of Culture. Ownership is the only test. A famous museum with a municipal owner is out; an unvisited state store room is in.

Three consequences follow, and each one catches people out. Civic, diocesan and private museums charge as usual, which covers a large part of what you would visit in Venice and Florence. The Vatican Museums are not an Italian state museum. And the scheme is documented by two pages of one ministry, with no independent confirmation, so it is authoritative about its own rules and nothing more.

## The arithmetic: 453 institutions, 299 of them ticketed

The 2024 ministry survey counted 453 state institutions: 299 charging admission and 154 free every day of the year. Of the total, 203 are museums proper, 176 of which charge and 27 of which do not; the rest are monuments, archaeological areas and museum circuits.

So the headline "free museums on the first Sunday" applies to 299 places. For the other 154 the day is ordinary, and for a visitor the practical question is which of the 299 is worth timing a trip around.

## Three regions where the rule does not exist

Three regions are outside the scheme completely: Valle d'Aosta, Trentino-Alto Adige and Sicily, because heritage there is run by the region or by the autonomous provinces. Only 17 regions are surveyed.

For Sicily this is not a detail. The Valley of the Temples at Agrigento, the Villa Romana del Casale and the ancient theater at Taormina are regional, not state, so the national free Sunday says nothing about them. Any article promising a free Sunday at a Sicilian archaeological park is guessing.

## Worked example one: the Colosseum, and its winter clock

The Colosseum archaeological park is free on the first Sunday of every month and on April 25, June 2 and November 4. It opens at 8:30 am, with the Roman Forum and the Palatine opening at 9:00 am, and closes on December 25 and January 1.

The trap is the winter timetable. From October 25, 2026 to February 28, 2027 last entry is 3:30 pm and the site closes at 4:30 pm (15:30 and 16:30 on Italian boards). A free Sunday in that window gives you a short afternoon, and every other visitor in Rome has read the same rule.

## Worked example two: Villa d'Este, and the Monday problem

Villa d'Este at Tivoli is free on the first Sunday, on April 25, June 2 and November 4, and additionally on March 8, when entry is free for women. It closes on January 1 and December 25.

Its other rule is the one that ruins itineraries: on Mondays it opens at 2:00 pm and not in the morning. Pairing a free Sunday at Tivoli with a Monday morning at the same site does not work, and the site-level March 8 concession shows that individual places add their own free days on top of the national list.

## Worked example three: Urbino, where free Sunday is worth 12 euro

The Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in the Palazzo Ducale at Urbino charges 12 euro full and 2 euro reduced, with an annual card at 30 euro, and it is free on the first Sunday of the month.

It opens Tuesday to Sunday 8:30 am to 7:15 pm, with the ticket desk closing at 6:15 pm, and on Mondays it opens only in the afternoon, 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. December 25 and January 1 are the two closed days. Urbino is the case where a free Sunday is genuinely useful: a 12 euro ticket in a town small enough that the queue is not the problem.

## How to use the day without wasting it

Sample first Sundays in 2026 include March 1, May 3 and August 2. Booking was not required at the sites verified for the scheme, but each site keeps its own rules, and a place that normally sells timed slots can go on issuing them at zero euro.

The rational play is to spend the free day on an expensive ticket in a place that is not Rome or Florence, and to pay full price on any other day at the sites where the queue costs more than the ticket.
