The longest direct train ride in our sources is Rome to Lecce, 5 hours 47 minutes on the fastest direct Frecciarossa, followed by Milan to Naples at 4 hours 33, Rome to Turin at 4 hours 25 and Rome to Bari at 4 hours 14, on the timetable in force in September 2026.

## The criterion: the fastest direct train, above four hours

A route qualifies if its fastest direct train, with no change, takes more than four hours. We rank by that fastest time, because it's the one a timetable can promise; the median and the slowest direct train come after it.

The survey covers the city pairs in our verified sources, measured on the timetable in force in September 2026, which runs until the December 2026 timetable change. A long route with no direct train at all doesn't appear, because it fails the first test.

From Bari Centrale to Lecce the Frecciarossa takes 1 hour 25 minutes, and the Regionale Veloce takes 1 hour 41 to 1 hour 43 minutes for 13.20 euro, on the fares checked for September 15, 2026. If you're not bound to a direct train, Bari is a reasonable place to break the journey.

## Milan to Naples is long but frequent
