Veneto recorded 73,472,377 overnight stays in 2024, 15.76% of the Italian total of 466,158,045, which makes it the most visited Italian region on the only measure that counts nights rather than arrivals.

## The criterion: nights spent, not arrivals, and 21 units

The ranking uses one figure: overnight stays recorded by accommodation establishments in 2024, for each of the 21 NUTS2 statistical units, summing to 466,158,045. Arrivals are a different measure and produce a different order, which is where most published rankings diverge from this one.

Nights are the better number for a traveler because they carry length of stay. A region with many arrivals and short stays runs on day trips and one-night stops; a region with many nights runs on weeks. The year is 2024 because that is the last fully comparable year in the series.

## Veneto first, Lazio second: the correction

Veneto takes 15.76% of Italian nights and Lazio 11.10%, so the region with Venice, Verona, the Dolomite share and the Adriatic beaches outranks the region with Rome by more than 21 million nights.

Plenty of English-language lists print Lazio first and Veneto third. That happens when a list ranks arrivals, or quotes a pre-2020 year, or silently mixes the two. On nights spent in 2024 the order at the top is Veneto, Lazio, Tuscany, Lombardy, and it is not close.

## The Trentino-Alto Adige split changes the table

Bolzano recorded 37,046,803 nights and Trento 19,644,628, and they appear in sixth and eighth place as separate units because they are separate autonomous provinces with separate statistics.

Merge them, as many general lists do, and the combined unit slots into second place between Veneto and Lazio, pushing everything below it down a rank. That single decision is the biggest source of disagreement between two otherwise identical tables, and it is why the two provinces get [their own comparison](/compare/trentino-vs-alto-adige) on this site.

## The bottom of the table is not a recommendation

Molise closed 2024 with 456,284 nights, 0.10% of the national total, with Basilicata on 2,511,372 and Valle d'Aosta on 3,695,059. Those three regions together take less than 1.5% of Italian nights.

A low number here means thin infrastructure, not a secret. Fewer trains, fewer beds, shorter seasons, and in Molise a regional capital that is one of the [places no direct train reaches](/best/capitals-you-cannot-reach-by-direct-train). That is worth knowing before a list of quiet regions sends you somewhere with no evening service back.

## What nights do not tell you

All 466,158,045 nights in this table were spent in registered accommodation, so the count misses anyone staying with family, in a second home, or in an unregistered rental. That matters most in the regions where family visits dominate, which are the southern ones.

It also flattens seasonality. Bolzano's 37,046,803 nights are split between a winter and a summer season; Liguria's 16,128,866 are concentrated in a few coastal months. Two identical annual totals can mean a full year or eight busy weeks.

## FAQ

### Which Italian region gets the most tourists?

Veneto, by nights spent. It recorded 73,472,377 overnight stays in 2024, 15.76% of the Italian total of 466,158,045, ahead of Lazio at 51,753,567 and Tuscany at 46,220,821. Lists that put Lazio first are using arrivals or an older year.

### Where does Sicily rank among Italian regions?

Tenth, with 17,348,238 overnight stays in 2024, 3.72% of the national total. Sardinia is twelfth at 15,610,251. Both islands take fewer nights than Emilia-Romagna, which recorded 40,782,820 without a famous coastline abroad.

### Why are Trentino and Alto Adige listed separately?

Because they are two autonomous provinces and two separate statistical units. Bolzano recorded 37,046,803 nights in 2024 and Trento 19,644,628. Counted as one region they would sit second in the table, between Veneto and Lazio.

### Which Italian region has the fewest visitors?

Molise, with 456,284 overnight stays in 2024, 0.10% of the national total. Basilicata is next at 2,511,372 and Valle d'Aosta at 3,695,059. The gap between Molise and Veneto is a factor of more than one hundred and sixty.

### Where should I go after Rome, Florence and Venice?

Read the middle of the table, not the bottom. Emilia-Romagna at 40,782,820 nights, Campania at 21,369,462 and Puglia at 17,894,361 all have full transport and accommodation networks, which the regions under 5 million nights do not.
