# Italian regions with no UNESCO site, or almost none

> Molise and Valle d'Aosta have no World Heritage site in 2026. Abruzzo and Calabria have one each, and in both it is a share of the ancient beech forests.

Two Italian regions have no World Heritage site in 2026, Molise and Valle d'Aosta, and two more have only one each, Abruzzo and Calabria, where in both cases the single site is a share of the ancient beech forests.

## The criterion: reading the table from the bottom

Lists of UNESCO sites start from the top, with Lombardy's 10. This one starts from zero, and it uses the same count: a site that crosses a regional border counts once in every region it touches.

That rule is generous to small regions, because a share of a multi-region site is enough to count. Even so, two regions score nothing and two more score one on the strength of a few forest stands.

## The bottom of the table

| Rank from the bottom | Region | World Heritage sites, 2026 | What the count is made of |
|---|---|---:|---|
| 1 | Molise | 0 | none |
| 1 | Valle d'Aosta | 0 | none |
| 3 | Abruzzo | 1 | its share of the ancient beech forests |
| 3 | Calabria | 1 | its share of the ancient beech forests |
| 5 | Liguria | 2 | |
| 5 | Marche | 2 | |
| 5 | Sardinia | 2 | |
| 5 | Trentino-Alto Adige | 2 | |

Eight regions hold 10 sites between them under this count, the same number as Lombardy alone. The full table from the top is on [UNESCO sites by region](/best/unesco-sites-by-region).

## Molise and Valle d'Aosta: zero on the list

Molise and Valle d'Aosta were the only two Italian regions with no World Heritage property in 2026. For Valle d'Aosta there's no near miss in our sources; for Molise there is one.

The Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise national park extends into Molise, and the park's beech forests are part of a World Heritage site. But none of the inscribed forest components falls on the Molise side of the boundary. The park crosses the border and the listing stops at it. The two regions' story is told on [the two regions with no UNESCO site](/stories/the-two-regions-with-no-unesco-site).

## Abruzzo and Calabria: one site, and it's a forest

Abruzzo's and Calabria's single World Heritage property is the same one: the ancient beech forests of the Carpathians and other regions of Europe, whose Italian components lie in 7 regions: Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Puglia and Tuscany.

So neither region has a listed town, monument or archaeological site of its own. What gets them off zero is a set of forest stands that belong to a serial property spread over a continent. For the other five regions on that list, the beech forests are one site among several; for these two, they're the whole count.

## The other UNESCO labels in the same regions

Transhumance has been on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage since 2019, on a joint nomination by Italy, Austria and Greece, extended in 2023 to ten states in all. In Italy it's practiced along the tratturi, the grass droves.

Two of the regions at the bottom hold UNESCO Global Geoparks. The Majella in Abruzzo joined the network on April 21, 2021 and now covers 39 municipalities; the Aspromonte in Calabria, 64,541 ha at the southern tip of the region, joined the same year. Neither label is World Heritage, but both are UNESCO, and both are more than the table shows. See also [intangible heritage](/best/intangible-heritage).

## Where a new site would come from

Italy had 30 sites on its UNESCO tentative list at our check, the list of places a country intends to nominate. Any future World Heritage site for Molise or Valle d'Aosta would have to appear there first.

Which regions those 30 sites are in is not in our verified sources, so we can't tell you whether either region at the bottom has a candidate waiting. We've logged it as the next thing to check. For Molise's heritage as it stands, see [UNESCO in Molise](/unesco/in-molise).

## FAQ

### Which Italian regions have no UNESCO World Heritage site?

Molise and Valle d'Aosta, the only two of Italy's 20 regions with no World Heritage property in 2026. At the other end of the table Lombardy has 10, counting every site that crosses a regional border once for each region it touches.

### Does Abruzzo have a UNESCO World Heritage site?

One, and it's a share of a larger site: Abruzzo's components of the ancient beech forests of the Carpathians and other regions of Europe. The same serial site has Italian components in seven regions, and it is also Calabria's only World Heritage property.

### Why doesn't Molise have a UNESCO site when part of the Abruzzo national park is in Molise?

Because none of the inscribed beech forest components falls in the Molise part of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise national park. The park crosses the border; the World Heritage listing, which covers only 7 regions' forest stands, does not.

### Do these regions have any UNESCO recognition at all?

Yes, just not World Heritage. Transhumance has been on UNESCO's intangible heritage list since 2019, and Molise keeps the largest network of its grass droves. The Majella in Abruzzo and the Aspromonte in Calabria both became UNESCO Global Geoparks in 2021.

### How many Italian sites are waiting on the UNESCO tentative list?

30 sites were on Italy's tentative list at the time of our check. The tentative list is the step before a nomination, so it's where any future site for Molise or Valle d'Aosta would first appear; which regions the 30 are in isn't in our sources.
