# DOCG on the label: what it means, region by region

> DOCG is the top of Italy's 522 wine names, 79 in 2026: Piedmont has 19, Veneto 14, Tuscany 11, four regions none. What the letters promise, and exports.

DOCG on an Italian label marks one of the 79 wine names at the top of a pyramid of 522 in 2026, and the regions that hold them are unevenly spread: Piedmont has 19, Veneto 14, Tuscany 11, and four regions, Valle d'Aosta, Liguria, Trentino-Alto Adige and Molise, have none.

## What the four letters promise in a shop at home

DOCG stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, and it sits above DOC and IGT: in 2026 Italy has 79 DOCG names, 332 DOC and 111 IGT. The EU files DOCG and DOC together as protected designations of origin, DOP, and IGT as protected geographical indications, IGP, which is why a DOCG wine sold in London or New York may carry both the Italian letters and the EU wording.

The letters tell you where the grapes grew and under which rules, not how good the bottle is. They do tell you something about scarcity: 79 names out of 522 is about one in seven, and no region can give itself one, since producers apply and the agriculture ministry grants.

Italy has more protected wine names than any other EU country, 522 against 440 for France and 147 for Greece, inside a total of 888 Italian geographical indications across food, wine and spirits. A shelf of Italian wine abroad is therefore a shelf of names, and the DOCG ones are the fewest.

## Most of that wine is for export: €7.19 billion in 2024

Italian DOP and IGP wines earned €7.19 billion in exports in 2024, out of €12.3 billion for all Italian geographical indications, which passed €12 billion for the first time that year, up 8.2%. Food names accounted for the other €5.15 billion.

At the production end, protected wine was worth €11.04 billion in 2024 against €9.64 billion for protected food. So the bottle you pick up at home is part of the larger half of Italy's quality system, and of the half that travels. The money side is on [the DOP economy](/food/dop-igp-economy).

## The criterion: DOCG wines on the ministry's list

A region's score is the number of DOCG wines attributed to it on the agriculture ministry's official list of protected wines, updated on March 27, 2026. DOCG is the top tier of Italian wine designations, and it's the only one ranked here.

The count is ours, done line by line on that list, because the ministry doesn't publish the total as a figure. That's also why many guides still say 76 or 77: they're repeating an older count.

## The ranking, all twenty regions

| Rank | Region | DOCG wines, 2026 |
|---|---|---:|
| 1 | Piedmont | 19 |
| 2 | Veneto | 14 |
| 3 | Tuscany | 11 |
| 4 | Marche | 5 |
| 4 | Lombardy | 5 |
| 6 | Campania | 4 |
| 6 | Puglia | 4 |
| 6 | Friuli-Venezia Giulia | 4 |
| 9 | Lazio | 3 |
| 9 | Abruzzo | 3 |
| 11 | Emilia-Romagna | 2 |
| 11 | Umbria | 2 |
| 13 | Basilicata | 1 |
| 13 | Sicily | 1 |
| 13 | Calabria | 1 |
| 13 | Sardinia | 1 |
| none | Valle d'Aosta, Liguria, Trentino-Alto Adige, Molise | 0 |

Add up the column and you get 80, not 79. The difference is the Lison DOCG, which belongs to both Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto and is counted in each.

## Three regions hold more than half

Piedmont, Veneto and Tuscany together account for more than half of Italy's 79 DOCG wines. Below them the table drops to 5, and from there no region has more than a handful.

Piedmont also leads the DOC count, tied with Tuscany at 41 names each, and has no IGT at all: every Piedmontese wine with a geographical name is DOC or DOCG, so a Piedmont bottle abroad never carries the lower tier. The vineyard landscapes of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014, a serial site of five wine areas and one castle, with a core zone of 10,789 ha and a buffer zone of 76,249 ha. For the region's food and wine as a whole, see [food in Piedmont](/food/in-piemonte).

## Four regions have none

Valle d'Aosta, Liguria, Trentino-Alto Adige and Molise have no DOCG wine in 2026; the other sixteen regions have at least one. For two of the four, Valle d'Aosta and Molise, it's one more empty line in a pattern: they're also the two regions with no UNESCO World Heritage site.

None of the four is a region without wine. A DOCG is a designation that producers apply for and the ministry grants, and these regions make their protected wines under the tiers below it. Valle d'Aosta, like Piedmont, has no IGT either: its protected wine is all DOC.

## Abruzzo, a mid-table case

Abruzzo has three DOCG wines: Colline Teramane Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Terre Tollesi or Tullum, and Casauria. The first to be promoted was Colline Teramane, by ministerial decree on February 20, 2003, after 35 years as a DOC since 1968.

It's made in 31 municipalities of the province of Teramo with at least 90% Montepulciano grapes. The regional consortium brings together 191 producers and lists, beside the three DOCGs, the historic DOCs Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, Abruzzo and Villamagna. Calabria, at the bottom of the table with one, joined the DOCG regions with Cirò Classico.

## Where DOCG sits in the pyramid

Italy has 522 wine designations in 2026: 79 DOCG and 332 DOC, which the EU groups together as protected designations of origin, DOP, and 111 IGT, which it treats as protected geographical indications, IGP.

The lower tiers have their own leaders. Lombardy and Sardinia have the most IGT names, 15 each, while Piedmont and Tuscany share the DOC lead at 41. The full pyramid, and how to read each tier on a label, is on [Italian wine denominations](/food/wine-denominations).

## FAQ

### What does DOCG mean on an Italian wine label?

Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, the top tier of Italy's wine names: 79 of the 522 denominations in 2026. Under EU rules it's a protected designation of origin, DOP, the same legal status as the 332 DOC wines, with stricter production rules on top.

### Which Italian region has the most DOCG wines?

Piedmont, with 19 of Italy's 79 DOCG wines in 2026, ahead of Veneto with 14 and Tuscany with 11. Together those three regions account for more than half of all Italian DOCGs. Marche and Lombardy follow with 5 each.

### How much Italian DOP and IGP wine is exported?

€7.19 billion in 2024, out of €12.3 billion of exports for all Italian geographical indications, food and wine together, the first time the total passed €12 billion. Wine is the larger half, and it's the half most likely to be on a shelf outside Italy.

### How many DOCG wines are there in Italy?

79 in 2026, counted line by line on the agriculture ministry's official list of protected wines. Many wine guides still give 76 or 77, which are older counts. The ministry itself doesn't state the total as a single figure.

### Which Italian regions have no DOCG wine?

Four of the twenty: Valle d'Aosta, Liguria, Trentino-Alto Adige and Molise. The other sixteen have at least one DOCG in 2026. Having none doesn't mean no quality wine: those regions have DOC wines, the next tier down.

### Does Abruzzo have a DOCG wine?

Three. The first was Colline Teramane Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, a DOCG since a ministerial decree of February 20, 2003 after being a DOC from 1968, made in 31 municipalities of the province of Teramo with at least 90% Montepulciano grapes. The others are Terre Tollesi, or Tullum, and Casauria.
