# Matera or Alberobello: which to see, and how

> Same UNESCO criteria, three years apart: Matera's Sassi cover 1,016 ha, Alberobello's trulli 10.52 ha. One city has no national railway. How visits differ.

See Matera if you have a full day and are willing to reach a city that isn't on the national rail network, and Alberobello if you have a morning: both were listed by UNESCO on the same criteria, (iii), (iv) and (v), but Matera's protected core covers 1,016 ha and Alberobello's 10.52 ha.

## Matera and Alberobello compared

| | Matera | Alberobello |
|---|---:|---:|
| UNESCO inscription | 1993 | 1996 |
| Criteria | (iii), (iv), (v) | (iii), (iv), (v) |
| Protected core zone | 1,016 ha | 10.52 ha |
| Buffer zone | 4,365 ha | not stated in our sources |
| What is protected | the Sassi and the park of rock churches | over 1,500 trulli in the Monti and Aia Piccola districts |
| Residents | 59,368, January 1, 2026 | not in our sources |
| National railway | none, narrow gauge only | not in our sources |

Both are inhabited towns, not archaeological parks, and both were listed for the way people built and lived there. The difference is in the third row: almost a hundred times the protected area.

## The same three criteria, a hundredfold difference in size

Matera's core zone covers 1,016 ha and Alberobello's 10.52 ha, under identical UNESCO criteria awarded three years apart. Matera also has 4,365 ha of buffer zone around the core.

In practice the numbers tell you how long you need. Alberobello's listed area is two neighborhoods, Rione Monti and Aia Piccola, which you can walk end to end in a morning. Matera's listing includes the Sassi and a whole park of rock-cut churches across the ravine, which is a day at least and more if you want the churches.

## Matera is not on the national rail network

Matera has no station on Italy's national railway: the only trains are the narrow-gauge Ferrovie Appulo Lucane, and Bari to Matera counts as 70 km in their fare table, against 45 km to Altamura and 60 km to Gravina.

A new national line is under construction: Ferrandina to Matera La Martella, 20 km of electrified single track costing 525 million euro, partly funded by Italy's recovery plan. Works started in 2023 and completion is expected in 2028. Until then, Matera is reached by the regional line from Bari or by road. The full context is on [the capital without a railway](/stories/the-only-capital-without-a-railway).

## On Sundays the Matera train is a bus

On Sundays and public holidays there are eight arrivals at Matera Centrale from Bari, and all of them are buses: Ferrovie Appulo Lucane replace the train entirely, and the buses accept rail tickets. With the timetable of August 3, 2026, the first arrives at 9:48 am and the last at 11:03 pm.

If you're planning a weekend, that changes the day. The bus is not a worse way to arrive, but the timetable is thinner, and the first arrival is late enough to cost you the cool of the morning in summer. The station-by-station detail is on [getting to Matera](/towns/matera/getting-there).

## Alberobello's trulli are built without mortar

Alberobello's protected area holds over 1,500 trulli, dry-stone buildings roofed with limestone slabs called chiancarelle, laid without mortar over a double wall with a loose core and underground cisterns for rainwater.

Their history is compressed into two centuries. Trulli stood in Rione Monti by the middle of the 16th century, the town grew after 1620, and in 1797 Ferdinand IV of Bourbon made Alberobello a royal city, after which building new trulli went out of use. Parts of the town were declared national monuments between 1909 and 1936.

The one interior with a fixed ticket in our sources is the Trullo Sovrano: 2.50 euro in 2026, open 10:00 am to 12:45 pm and 3:30 to 6:30 pm from April to October, with the afternoon ending at 6:00 pm from November to March.

## What we could not verify for Alberobello

Three facts about Alberobello are not published in our verified sources: its population, the buffer zone around its listed area and the train service to the town. We know Matera's railway situation in detail and Alberobello's not at all, so this page does not tell you how to reach Alberobello by train.

We've logged the gap. If you're travelling without a car, check the regional operator's timetable before you build a day around both towns.

## Pick which

Pick Matera if you have at least a full day, you want the rock churches as well as the Sassi, and you can plan around a regional railway that becomes a bus on Sundays. Start from [Matera](/towns/matera) and [the Sassi](/attractions/sassi-di-matera).

Pick Alberobello if you have a morning, you want the trulli and one interior for 2.50 euro, and Matera doesn't fit. See [the trulli of Alberobello](/attractions/trulli-di-alberobello). If you want both on one trip, [seven days in Puglia and Matera](/itineraries/7-days-puglia-and-matera) puts them in order.

## FAQ

### When did Matera and Alberobello become UNESCO sites?

Matera's Sassi and its park of rock churches were inscribed in 1993 and the trulli of Alberobello in 1996. Both were listed under exactly the same three cultural criteria, (iii), (iv) and (v), although Matera's protected core is 1,016 ha and Alberobello's 10.52 ha.

### Is there a train to Matera?

Not on the national network. Matera is served only by the narrow-gauge Ferrovie Appulo Lucane from Bari, 70 km by tariff distance. A new 20 km national line from Ferrandina to Matera La Martella has been under construction since 2023, with completion expected in 2028.

### Does the Bari to Matera train run on Sundays?

No. On Sundays and public holidays Ferrovie Appulo Lucane replace the whole Bari to Matera train service with buses, which accept rail tickets. With the timetable of August 3, 2026 there are eight arrivals at Matera Centrale from Bari, from 9:48 am to 11:03 pm.

### How much does the Trullo Sovrano cost?

A single ticket of 2.50 euro in 2026. It opens 10:00 am to 12:45 pm and 3:30 to 6:30 pm from April to October, and closes half an hour earlier in the afternoon, at 6:00 pm, from November to March.
