The first two rows are almost identical; the 9 below them are not, and that is where the decision lives.

## The visitor numbers say the islands are equals

Sicily took 17,348,238 overnight stays in 2024, 3.72% of the Italian total, and Sardinia 15,610,251, 3.35%. The two sit tenth and twelfth in the national ranking of 21 units.

Nobody choosing between them should read anything into that gap. What it does say is that neither island is a quiet alternative to the other: both are firmly inside the top half of Italian destinations, and both concentrate their season into the same months.

## Seven UNESCO sites against two

Sicily holds 7 World Heritage properties: the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento, the Villa Romana del Casale, the Aeolian Islands, the late baroque towns of the Val di Noto, Syracuse with the Pantalica necropolis, Mount Etna, and Arab-Norman Palermo with the cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale. None of them is shared with another region, so all seven are entirely on the island.

Sardinia holds 2: Su Nuraxi di Barumini, inscribed in 1997, and the domus de janas funerary tradition of prehistoric Sardinia, added in 2025. Both are prehistoric, and neither is a town.

This is the sharpest split in the comparison. A trip built on monuments and towns has seven anchors in Sicily and effectively one archaeological theme in Sardinia. A trip built on the sea does not care.

## Getting there: a twenty minute crossing against a night at sea

Sicily is 20 minutes from the mainland by fast ferry and Sardinia is not connected to it at all. Villa San Giovanni to Messina is by far the most used crossing for anyone arriving by car, and the ports on both sides, with Reggio Calabria, Milazzo, Tremestieri and Saline, are run as one system by the Strait port authority.

On foot the crossing is trivial: the Blu Jet fast ferry links Messina Porto Storico and Villa San Giovanni in 20 minutes, 16 times a day each way on the timetable in force since December 14, 2025, at 2.50 euro one way and 4.50 euro for a same-day return in 2026.

Sardinia has nothing comparable. Its port system covers Cagliari, Olbia, Golfo Aranci, Porto Torres, Oristano, Portovesme, Arbatax and Santa Teresa Gallura, with Olbia, Golfo Aranci, Porto Torres, Cagliari and Arbatax handling most passenger traffic. Golfo Aranci is the closest Sardinian port to the mainland, about 30 minutes by sea from Olbia; Santa Teresa Gallura is the one that goes to Corsica rather than to Italy.

Practically: a car reaches Sicily in twenty minutes of sea and reaches Sardinia by booking a crossing measured in hours, often overnight, months ahead in summer.

## Flying: more than twice the traffic into Sicily

Catania handled 12,369,485 passengers in 2025, up 0.2%, and Palermo 9,220,905, up 3.4%. Cagliari handled 5,254,433, up 1.8%, and Olbia 4,161,572, up 7.2%.

That is 21,590,390 arriving passengers on Sicily's two main airports against 9,416,005 on Sardinia's two. More traffic means more routes, more competition on fares and more recovery options when a flight is cancelled, and it is the least romantic and most decisive line in this comparison.

Olbia's traffic is also strongly seasonal, which is the operator's own description. Out of season the Costa Smeralda side of Sardinia loses much of its air access, while Catania and Palermo run year round.

## What each island makes you book

Sardinia now caps four beaches and requires a booking at each: La Pelosa at 1,500 people a day, Tuerredda at 1,100, Cala Mariolu at 700 sea landings, Cala Goloritzé at 250 at a time, each on its own portal with its own release time. No Sicilian beach in our sources runs an equivalent cap. What Sicily asks you to book instead is the archaeology, and the summit access on Etna, which needs a guide for the last stretch.

That inverts the usual assumption. The island people describe as wild is the one with the turnstiles; the island people describe as busy is the one you can still walk onto a beach on.

## Pick Sicily if, pick Sardinia if

Pick Sicily if you want seven World Heritage sites, cities you can use as bases, a volcano, year round flights into two large airports and a twenty minute crossing if you drive down. It is the easier island to reach, the easier one to travel without planning, and the one with more to see when the weather turns.

Pick Sardinia if the sea is the reason for the trip and you are willing to work for it: fewer flights, longer crossings, a beach booking calendar with four different release times, and two UNESCO sites that are both prehistoric. In August, book the ferry and the beaches before the hotel.
