Book Alto Adige if you want the denser, better-equipped mountain and accept booking your parking in advance, and book Trentino if you want a quieter one with a lake at 65 m in the same province: Bolzano took 37,046,803 nights in 2024 against Trento's 19,644,628.

## Two provinces, side by side

| | Alto Adige, Bolzano | Trentino, Trento |
|---|---:|---:|
| Overnight stays 2024 | 37,046,803 | 19,644,628 |
| Share of Italian nights | 7.95% | 4.21% |
| Language census | yes, 2024 | none |
| German-speaking share | 68.61% | not measured |
| UNESCO Dolomite systems | Puez-Odle, Sciliar-Catinaccio-Latemar, northern Dolomites, Bletterbach | Marmolada, Pale di San Martino, Catinaccio-Latemar, Brenta |
| Booked access at flagship sites | Lago di Braies, Alpe di Siusi | none in our sources |
| Lowest point on this page | not measured | Riva del Garda, 65 m |

Both provinces sell themselves as the Dolomites and both are right: the property is one, split into 9 systems, and they hold four each.

## Almost two to one on nights

Bolzano recorded 37,046,803 overnight stays in 2024, 7.95% of the Italian total, and Trento recorded 19,644,628, 4.21%. Counted separately, as the statistics do, they sit sixth and eighth in the national ranking.

That difference is the single most useful number for choosing between them. It means more beds, more lifts, more open restaurants in shoulder season and more competition on the north side, and it means fewer people on a given trail on the south side. Neither of those is a value judgment; both change what your week looks like.

## The language census exists on one side only

Alto Adige runs a language census every ten years and Trentino runs none. The 2024 edition, with a reference date of September 30, 2023, put 68.61% of declarants in the German group, 26.98% in the Italian group and 4.41% in the Ladin group. Against 2011 the Italian group gained 0.92 points, the German group lost 0.80 and the Ladin group lost 0.12.

This is not a curiosity. The declaration determines the ethnic proportional system that allocates public sector posts and resources, which is why it is compulsory for Italian citizens resident in the province and why it is published as a numbered statistical release, astat info 56/2024.

So a visitor crossing the provincial boundary is not moving between two shades of the same thing: on one side language group membership is a legal category with numbers attached, and on the other it is not measured at all.

## The Dolomites are cut in nine, and both provinces hold four

The Dolomites were inscribed in 2009 as a natural World Heritage property in nine separate mountain systems covering about 141,903 hectares across five provinces: Bolzano, Trento, Belluno, Pordenone and Udine.

Trentino holds four of the nine: the Marmolada, the Pale di San Martino with the Vette Feltrine, Catinaccio-Latemar and the Brenta group, which is the one that stands apart from the rest of the chain. Alto Adige's share includes Puez-Odle, Sciliar-Catinaccio-Latemar, the northern Dolomites and the Bletterbach.

Read those two lists together and you will see Catinaccio-Latemar in both, which is not an error: the systems straddle the boundary, and the provincial breakdown of the nine still needs refining against the nomination file. The point that survives the uncertainty is Brenta, the only listed Dolomite group with no share on the Alto Adige side.

## Alto Adige books its landscapes; Trentino does not

The two most photographed places in Alto Adige are both on booking systems. At Lago di Braies, from July 1 to September 15, 2026, between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, a car can only arrive with an online parking reservation costing 44 euro, or 49 euro for vehicles over 2.2 m tall. Buses 442 from Dobbiaco and 439 from Monguelfo cost 7 to 13 euro and must also be booked in the regulated period.

The Alpe di Siusi road is closed to private cars every day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, all year, with exceptions only for guests staying on the plateau and holders of the European Disability Card. Since June 29, 2026 both car parks require an online booking: 15 euro a day at P1 Spitzbühl, 30 euro at P2 Compatsch, with overnight parking banned between 11:00 pm and 5:00 am.

Two things worth keeping straight. Entry to Braies itself is free, and walkers and cyclists face no restriction at any time; what is rationed is the car and the parking space. And no equivalent system appears in our sources for any Trentino site, which is a real difference in how the two provinces manage demand, not just a gap in our data.

## Trentino has a lake at 65 m

The northern tip of Lake Garda is in Trentino: Riva del Garda, 17,784 residents, sits at 65 m above sea level, the lowest point of the autonomous province of Trento, a short drive from the Brenta Dolomites.

No comparable altitude range exists on the Alto Adige side of this comparison. That is the argument for Trentino in shoulder season: a province where you can be on the Garda shore at 65 m in the morning and under a listed Dolomite group in the afternoon, without crossing a provincial border.

## Pick which

Pick Alto Adige if you want the denser network, a province where 68.61% of residents declare the German language group, four Dolomite systems including the northern ones, and if you are willing to book a parking slot weeks ahead and pay 44 euro for it at Braies. It is the province that has decided to manage its own success.

Pick Trentino if you would rather have 19,644,628 nights of company than 37,046,803, if the Brenta group is the mountain you want, or if you want Garda and the Dolomites in a single province. It is the cheaper decision on access and the harder one on infrastructure.

## FAQ

### What is the difference between Trentino and Alto Adige?

They are two autonomous provinces, not one region in practice. Bolzano, or Alto Adige, is 68.61% German-speaking by its 2024 language census and took 37,046,803 nights in 2024. Trento took 19,644,628 and runs no language census at all.

### Which is busier, Trentino or South Tyrol?

South Tyrol, by close to two to one: 37,046,803 overnight stays in 2024 against 19,644,628 for Trentino. That is 7.95% of all Italian nights against 4.21%, and it means more beds, more lifts and more competition on the northern side.

### Do you have to book to visit Lago di Braies?

To arrive by car between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm from July 1 to September 15, 2026, yes: 44 euro for a parking slot booked online, 49 euro for vehicles over 2.2 m. Outside those hours and dates cars enter freely, and on foot or by bike there is never a restriction.

### Can you drive up to the Alpe di Siusi?

Not between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, any day. In those hours the plateau is reached only by cable car or bus, and since June 29, 2026 the two car parks must be booked online: 15 euro a day at P1 Spitzbühl, 30 euro at P2 Compatsch.

### Which province has the Brenta Dolomites?

Trentino. The Brenta group is one of the four UNESCO Dolomite systems in the province, along with the Marmolada, the Pale di San Martino with the Vette Feltrine, and Catinaccio-Latemar. It is the group that sits apart from the rest of the chain.
