August in Italy turns on three fixed dates: Ferragosto on the 15th, a national holiday that empties the cities and fills the coast, the Palio dell'Assunta in Siena on the 16th, and the opening of the Holy Door at L'Aquila on the evening of the 28th.

## August 15: the day the country stops

Ferragosto, the Assumption, is a civil national holiday and the peak of the summer exodus. Shops, restaurants and services close widely in the large cities; the coast and the resort towns are at their fullest; the motorways carry the year's heaviest traffic.

Two things about that list are worth separating. The holiday status is verified; the pattern of closures and crowds is a known behavior rather than a measured statistic, so treat it as a strong expectation and check the specific place you are going.

## August 16: the Palio dell'Assunta

The second Palio of the year runs in Piazza del Campo in Siena on August 16, after the July 2 Palio di Provenzano. Ten of the seventeen contrade take part in each race, and the city of Siena organizes it.

The date does not move. The only exception is weather: if the race is postponed it runs the next day, which is the one contingency to leave room for if you have booked around it.

## August 23 to 30: the Perdonanza at L'Aquila

The Perdonanza Celestiniana was inscribed on the UNESCO representative list in 2019, reference 01276, and the fixed part of it is the rite: the Holy Door of the basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio opens on the evening of August 28 and closes on the evening of August 29.

The tradition goes back to Celestine V's Bull of Pardon of 1294. Around the two evenings sit the procession of the Bull, the lighting of the Fire of Morrone and a walk of pardon through 23 villages, with around 1,000 costumed participants. The UNESCO file gives the window as August 23 to 29, the 2026 committee published August 23 to 30, so confirm the fringe dates locally.

## The heat has an official bulletin

The health ministry publishes a daily heat wave bulletin for 27 Italian cities, prepared by the epidemiology department of the Lazio regional health service. In summer 2026 it came out Monday to Friday and ran until September 20, 2026.

It is a real planning tool rather than a news item: the system watches daily mortality and emergency department admissions and flags risk for older people, people with chronic conditions, children and pregnant women. If you are traveling in August with anyone in those groups, the bulletin is the page to read at breakfast.

## Who is actually here in August

American visitors put 39.7% of their Italian nights into June, July and August, but the single peak month is July, not August, and 25.1% of their nights fall in the low season. The August crowd in Italy is not primarily an American one.

That matters if you are choosing between August and September. The country will be busy either way; the difference is that in August a good part of the service economy is on holiday too, and the [heat bulletin](/plan/heat-and-summer) is running.

## FAQ
