> Abruzzo logged 7,176,204 overnight stays in 2024, 1.54% of the Italian total, for 1,267,222 residents. Why L'Aquila's 2026 is not in that count.

Abruzzo recorded 7,176,204 overnight stays in 2024, 1.54% of the 466,158,045 counted in Italian accommodation, which works out at fewer than six tourist nights a year for each of its 1,267,222 residents.

## A 1.54% share, counted in nights

Italian accommodation businesses registered 466,158,045 overnight stays in 2024, and 7,176,204 of them were in Abruzzo. That is a share of 1.54%, and it measures nights slept, not people arriving.

The other side of the ratio is 1,267,222 residents on January 1, 2026, spread over 305 comuni in four provinces. Chieti is the most populous province, with 369,059 people, and L'Aquila the least, with 286,765.

Divide one figure by the other and you get fewer than six tourist nights per resident per year. Crowding at that ratio is a question of which weekend and which trailhead, not of the region.

## The park is the part the data can't see

The Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise national park covers 50,500 hectares, with 77,500 more of contiguous area, across 24 comuni in three regions, and its seat is at Pescasseroli.

The ISTAT series stops at the regional line. It has no entry for those 24 comuni, so it can't tell you what share of the 7,176,204 nights was spent inside the park, and no comune-level figure is published in the data used here.

The park dates from a private initiative in 1922 and royal decree 257 of 1923. Its trails, bears and rules are covered under [hiking in Abruzzo](/hiking/in-abruzzo).

## 2026 is a different year in L'Aquila

L'Aquila is Italy's capital of culture for 2026. The title was proclaimed at the culture ministry on March 14, 2024, with a state contribution of €1 million, and the year opened on January 17, 2026.

The organizers announced more than 300 events for it. That is their own figure for what was planned, not a count of what took place.

None of this sits in the 2024 total above, which closed before the title year began. If you're planning to stay in the city in 2026, treat the regional share as a floor rather than a forecast.

## Why the count stops at 2024

ISTAT widened its accommodation survey in 2025 to include non-professional rentals. Any 2025 total for Abruzzo will be larger in part because more beds were counted, not only because more people came.

So no growth rate is quoted here. Comparisons stay anchored to 2024 until the new series has more than one year behind it.

## What to do with 1.54%

Book normally for most of Abruzzo in 2026, with one exception you can name in advance: L'Aquila during its year as capital of culture.

## FAQ

### How many tourist nights does Abruzzo get per resident?

Fewer than six a year. The region recorded 7,176,204 overnight stays in 2024, 1.54% of Italy's 466,158,045, against 1,267,222 residents on January 1, 2026. At that ratio the region as a whole isn't crowded, and pressure depends on the date and the place.

### Will L'Aquila be busier in 2026?

Nobody has published a 2026 count yet, so there's no figure for the increase. L'Aquila is Italy's capital of culture for 2026, and its year opened on January 17, 2026 with more than 300 events announced by the organizers. The 2024 regional total predates all of it.

### Does the Abruzzo national park get crowded?

The data can't say. ISTAT publishes these nights by region, and the park's 24 comuni have no separate line in the series used here. What is known is the scale: 50,500 hectares plus 77,500 of contiguous area, spread across three regions, with the seat at Pescasseroli.

### Why is there no 2025 figure for Abruzzo here?

Because it wouldn't compare with 2024. ISTAT added non-professional rentals to its accommodation survey in 2025, so part of any increase would be newly counted beds rather than new visitors. 2024, with 7,176,204 nights in Abruzzo, is the last year on the old basis.
