The autonomous province of Trento recorded 19,644,628 overnight stays in 2024, 4.21% of the 466,158,045 nights registered across Italian accommodation, which is a heavy share for a territory this size.

## A small province with a national sized share

Italian accommodation businesses logged 466,158,045 overnight stays in 2024. Of those, 19,644,628 were spent in the province of Trento, giving it 4.21% of the national total.

That share puts a single Alpine province ahead of several whole regions. The unusual part is not the volume, it is that the volume arrives twice a year, in a winter season and a summer one, on the same beds.

## The two ends of the province

Riva del Garda sits at 65 meters above sea level, the lowest point in the province, with 17,784 residents at the northern tip of Lake Garda, a few tens of kilometers from the Brenta Dolomites. The local winds, the Ora and the Balinot, are the reason the sailing crowd is there at all.

Those two poles, a lake at 65 meters and mountains at ten times that height, absorb the traffic in different months. A crowded Garda in July says nothing about a valley in Val di Fiemme in the same week.

## Land that cannot be built on

The Magnifica Comunita di Fiemme has administered around 20,000 hectares of forest and pasture for over nine hundred years, since the Gebardine Pacts of 1111, on behalf of the inhabitants of eleven comuni: nine in Val di Fiemme plus Moena and Trodena.

Its Renaissance seat is at Cavalese and it is run by a Council of Regolani, a Comun Generale and a figure called the Scario. From the forest of Paneveggio comes the resonance spruce used for violins.

Collective ownership on that scale is one reason the valley floor here does not look like a coastal strip. Land held for a community of eleven comuni does not get sold off as building plots, and the tourism has had to fit around it.

## Why 2025 is left out

Trentino's numbers are compared against 2024 and stop there. ISTAT changed the perimeter of the accommodation survey in 2025 by bringing in non-professional rentals, and the resulting jump is a definition change before it is a visitor change.

## Reading the 4.21% as a traveler

Pressure here is a road problem, not a province problem. The valleys with a lift, a lake or a pass road at the end of them fill up; the ones without stay quiet on the same day.

Pick the valley, then the week, and the share stops mattering. More in [Trentino](/regions/provincia-trento), [regions by overnight stays](/best/regions-by-overnight-stays) and [the Dolomites](/nature/dolomiti).

## FAQ

### How many tourist nights does Trentino get?

19,644,628 in 2024, which is 4.21% of the 466,158,045 nights recorded across Italian accommodation that year. For an autonomous province rather than a full region, that is a very high share, and it arrives in two seasons rather than one.

### Where does the pressure concentrate?

At the two extremes of altitude. Riva del Garda, at the northern tip of Lake Garda, sits at 65 meters, the lowest point in the province, and has 17,784 residents. The Dolomite valleys are a few tens of kilometers away and thousands of meters higher.

### Why is so much of Trentino not built up?

Because a lot of it is not privately owned. The Magnifica Comunita di Fiemme has administered around 20,000 hectares of woods and pasture for the residents of eleven comuni since the Gebardine Pacts of 1111, which keeps that land outside the development market.

### Is 2025 busier than 2024?

That comparison is avoided here. ISTAT widened the survey perimeter in 2025 to include non-professional rentals, so a 2025 against 2024 change mixes a definition change with real movement. All year on year work on this site uses 2024.

### Does a high share mean queues everywhere?

No. 4.21% of national nights across a province of valleys means specific valleys are full while others stay empty. The bottleneck is usually a single road or a single cable car, not the province as a whole.
