## Why these routes are the length they are

The average American stay in Italy is 9.04 nights, with a change of accommodation every 2.92 nights, which works out at roughly three bases in a trip. Itineraries longer than that exist in this section, and they say openly at the top that they assume more time than most visitors have, instead of quietly assuming it.

## The month changes the route

39.7% of American nights fall between June and August and the low season takes 25.1%, with July the peak. Where a route only works outside the peak, because a pass is closed, a refuge is shut or a site sells out weeks ahead, the page names the months it means rather than recommending the trip in general terms. Where a leg hangs on one connection a day rather than an hourly one, the page says so, because missing that one costs a day and not an hour.
