The Aeolian Islands are on the World Heritage list for their geology, inscribed in 2000 under criterion viii over 1,216 hectares, and one of them, Stromboli, has been exploding every 10 to 20 minutes throughout.

## Listed for what the rock does, not for the view

The archipelago was inscribed in 2000 under natural criterion viii, with a listed area of 1,216 hectares. 7 islands make it up, Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi and Panarea, with 5 islets, less than 40 kilometers off the northeastern coast of Sicily.

The reason given is specific and it is not scenery. These islands gave world volcanology two eruption types that are named after them, the Vulcanian and the Strombolian, and those names are still in the textbooks.

Only 6 of Italy's 62 World Heritage properties are natural, and the Aeolian Islands are one of them, alongside the beech forests, the evaporitic karst of the northern Apennines, Monte San Giorgio, Mount Etna and the Dolomites. In a country listed almost entirely for what people built, this is a site listed for what the earth did.

## Stromboli explodes every 10 to 20 minutes

Stromboli sits at yellow alert and its persistent Strombolian activity produces explosions every 10 to 20 minutes from craters at around 700 meters above sea level, continuously rather than in episodes.

The island has two inhabited places, Stromboli and Ginostra, and two automatic early warning systems, one for paroxysmal explosions and one for tsunami, with sirens for the population. That is the level of instrumentation an island gets when the volcano is the landlord.

Alert levels are dynamic. Yellow was the state at the time of writing and it can move in either direction, so read the current INGV bulletin before you book a boat.

## Open conduit: why frequent eruption lowers the risk

Italy has exactly 2 volcanoes with an open conduit and persistent activity, Etna and Stromboli. They erupt frequently, and precisely because of that their short term hazard is rated lower.

The logic is counterintuitive and worth carrying. A system that vents continuously does not accumulate pressure the way a closed one does. The volcanoes that worry planners are the quiet ones.

Italy's alert scale has 4 levels, green, yellow, orange and red, with green meaning ordinary activity. National emergency planning exists for 4 volcanoes and Stromboli is on that list, together with Vulcano, Vesuvio and the Campi Flegrei. ## What the islands are not: a single destination

7 islands and 5 islets do not behave as one place, and this site holds no verified figures for their individual size, population or ferry links. What is verified is the roll call, Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi and Panarea, and the fact that one of them explodes every 10 to 20 minutes with two villages on it.

In 2026 Lipari entered the Blue Flag list as one of 14 new comuni, alongside Rimini, Limone sul Garda, Monte Argentario, Ispica and Teulada, while 3 comuni elsewhere lost the award. Blue Flag rates bathing water and beach management, and it applies to the comune that holds it, not to the archipelago.
