State museums in Italy are free on the first Sunday of every month under the Ministry of Culture's Domenica al museo, while the Vatican Museums, which are not state museums, are free on the last Sunday instead.

## What the first Sunday covers

On the first Sunday of each month, entry costs 0 euro at state monuments, museums, galleries, archaeological excavations, parks and monumental gardens. Dates in 2026 include March 1, May 3 and August 2.

Booking was not required at the sites verified for this scheme, and opening hours stay whatever each site normally keeps. The scheme is confirmed by two pages of the same ministry, so it is one institution speaking twice: authoritative on its own rules, not independently checked.

## What it does not cover, starting with the Vatican

3 categories sit outside the scheme entirely, civic, diocesan and private, which is why plenty of museums in Venice and Florence charge full price on a first Sunday like any other day. The Vatican Museums are outside it too, on different ground: they are in Vatican City.

Their prices are 20.00 euro full and 10.00 euro reduced, with 5.00 euro added for booking the skip-the-line slot online, 5.00 euro for schools and seminaries plus a 2.00 euro supplement, and 12.00 euro at Castel Gandolfo. Entry is free on the last Sunday of the month, for children under 7, and for visitors with a disability from 67%.

The ticket is valid only on the day of issue and is not refundable. The only official sales channel is tickets.museivaticani.va, which matters because the copycat domains around it are convincing.

## Free does not mean walk in: the Borghese

At the Galleria Borghese booking is compulsory for every category, including the free ticket for under-18s, and it costs 2.00 euro flat. Visits run in 2-hour slots with a cap on numbers, and the last slot at 5:45 pm is shorter than the others.

Prices are 16.00 euro full, 11.00 euro for that last slot, and 2.00 euro reduced for ages 18 to 25. Opening is Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 am to 7:00 pm (09:00 to 19:00), closed Mondays, December 25 and January 1. Bookings by phone go through +39 06 32810, Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 6:00 pm.

The capacity of 180 people per slot appears on the official page and is the most fragile figure on it. Treat it as the order of magnitude, not as a guarantee.

## What a free Sunday is actually worth

At the Colosseum a free first Sunday saves 18.00 euro, the full price of the ticket that covers the amphitheater, the Roman Forum and the Palatine. At the Vatican Museums it saves nothing, because their free day is the last Sunday.

Against that saving, set the queue. Free days concentrate demand into one day a month, and the 2.00 euro booking fee at the Borghese is still payable, so the cheapest day is rarely the fastest one.

## How to use the two dates

Aim the first Sunday at a state site and the last Sunday at the Vatican Museums, where the full price is 20.00 euro, and check each site's own page before you rely on either. The [last-checked index](/plan/opening-hours) records when each of these rules was verified.

## FAQ

### Which museums are free on the first Sunday of the month?

State ones: monuments, museums, galleries, archaeological sites, parks and monumental gardens run by the Ministry of Culture. Dates in 2026 include March 1, May 3 and August 2. Civic, diocesan and private museums are outside the scheme and charge as usual.

### Are the Vatican Museums free on the first Sunday?

No, on the last Sunday of the month. They are not a state museum. The normal price is 20.00 euro full and 10.00 euro reduced, with 5.00 euro added if you book the timed entry online, and the ticket is valid only on the day of issue.

### Does free entry mean I can skip booking?

Not everywhere. At the Galleria Borghese booking stays compulsory for every category, including the free under-18 ticket, and costs 2.00 euro flat. The state scheme itself required no booking at the sites we verified, but each site sets its own rules.

### How much do I save on a free Sunday?

18.00 euro at the Colosseum, which is the full price of the ticket covering the amphitheater, the Roman Forum and the Palatine. Nothing at the Vatican Museums, whose free day is the last Sunday of the month instead.

### What is the official Vatican Museums ticket site?

tickets.museivaticani.va, and it is the only official sales channel. Full entry is 20.00 euro, plus 5.00 euro for the online timed slot; children under 7 and visitors with a disability from 67% enter free. Tickets are not refundable.
