# Opening hours: what we checked, and when

> Every opening time here carries the date it was checked. These were verified on September 1, 2026 on the operator's own channel, and the gaps stay visible.

Every opening time on this site carries the date it was checked: the three below were verified on September 1, 2026 against the operator's own channel, and anything that could not be confirmed is marked rather than filled in.

## Why the date beats the hour

Since 2012 the only obligation left to an Italian shop or restaurant is to display the hours it actually keeps, on a visible sign. That sign outranks every website, including the hours inside a map app, because nobody is obliged to keep those updated.

An hour without a date is a claim about the past presented as a fact about today. That is why this site prints the check date next to the number, and why the check date is the part worth trusting.

## Checked on September 1, 2026

3 checks sit behind this page, each made on the channel that actually sells or governs the thing:

- **Brunelleschi Dome, Florence.** Timed slot that cannot be changed or canceled. Last entry 6:45 pm Monday to Friday, 4:30 pm Saturday; Sundays and public holidays 12:45 pm to 4:30 pm. Closed for maintenance November 16 to 20, 2026. Source: the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore ticket FAQ.
- **Free entry at state museums.** First Sunday of every month, no booking required at the sites verified, opening hours set site by site. Source: Ministry of Culture.
- **Shop and restaurant hours.** Liberalized since January 1, 2012, with no obligation to close on Sunday or on a public holiday. Source: the ministry ruling that cites article 31 of decree law 201/2011.

## The Florence dome is the strictest slot in Italy

1 rule makes this the strictest slot in Italy: the dome booking cannot be changed or canceled, so a missed time is a lost ticket and no counter will fix it. Last entry is 6:45 pm from Monday to Friday and 4:30 pm on Saturday; on Sundays and public holidays the climb runs only between 12:45 pm and 4:30 pm.

You need the Brunelleschi Pass, and the dome closes for maintenance from November 16 to 20, 2026. The official FAQ sets no minimum age for the climb, which is a question the ticket page is asked constantly and answers by omission.

## What "not published" means on this site

1 hour missing is better than 1 hour invented, so where a site has not released its winter times the gap stays visible here. An example is live right now: the Colosseum's summer closing time was ambiguous on the page checked on September 1, 2026, so it appears nowhere on these pages, and the [ticket release page](/plan/colosseum-ticket-release) says so out loud.

The same rule applies to prices. A number that could not be confirmed on the operator's own page is described as unverified, not smoothed into a range.

## The expiry dates we work to

Every fact behind these hours has a validity date: June 30, 2027 for the Florence dome rules and for the free Sunday scheme, December 31, 2028 for the shop hours law. When one passes, the page is rechecked or the figure comes off.

Two more pages carry the daily consequences of all this: [what closes on Mondays](/plan/closed-on-mondays) and [the free museum days](/plan/free-museum-days).

## FAQ

### Why are Google Maps opening hours wrong in Italy?

Because nobody is obliged to update them. Since 2012 the only legal duty is to display the hours actually kept on a sign at the door, so the paper on the glass is the current source and a map listing is a copy of whatever was entered once.

### Are shops in Italy allowed to open on Sunday?

Yes, since January 1, 2012. Article 31 of decree law 201/2011 removed every restriction on trading hours for retail and for bars and restaurants, including the obligation to close on Sundays and public holidays. Closing is now a business decision.

### Can I change a Brunelleschi Dome booking in Florence?

No. The slot cannot be changed or canceled, so a missed time is a lost ticket. Last entry is 6:45 pm Monday to Friday and 4:30 pm on Saturday; on Sundays and public holidays the climb runs only from 12:45 pm to 4:30 pm.

### When is the Florence dome closed for maintenance?

From November 16 to November 20, 2026, according to the ticket office FAQ checked on September 1, 2026. The Brunelleschi Pass is required to climb, and the official FAQ sets no minimum age for the ascent.

### How often do you recheck these hours?

Each fact carries an expiry date and we work to it. The Florence dome booking rules and the free first Sunday scheme expire on June 30, 2027; the shop hours law runs to December 31, 2028. When a date passes, the page is rechecked or the number comes down.
