# Rome weather: the 1991-2020 normals

> August is Rome's warmest month at 77.7°F mean, not July. Monthly temperature and rainfall from the WMO 1991-2020 normals, and what those numbers leave out.

Rome's warmest month is August, mean 77.7°F (25.4°C) at the Ciampino station, just above July at 77.2°F (25.1°C); January is the coldest at 45.5°F (7.5°C), and the year averages 60.4°F (15.8°C).

## What these figures are, and what they are not

These are climate normals for the 30 years from 1991 to 2020, the standard set by the World Meteorological Organization, computed on the stations of the Italian Air Force meteorological service. Italy submitted 84 stations to that dataset.

A monthly value gets published only when at least 24 of the 30 years are valid. Otherwise it is coded as missing and no annual total exists for that variable. Keep that rule in mind: Rome runs straight into it two sections down.

## Month by month at Ciampino, 423 feet (129 m)

Mean, mean daily maximum and mean daily minimum, in °F with °C in brackets:

| Month | Mean | Max | Min |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 45.5 (7.5) | 53.6 (12.0) | 38.1 (3.4) |
| February | 46.4 (8.0) | 55.4 (13.0) | 38.1 (3.4) |
| March | 51.3 (10.7) | 60.4 (15.8) | 42.6 (5.9) |
| April | 56.5 (13.6) | 65.8 (18.8) | 47.5 (8.6) |
| May | 64.4 (18.0) | 74.1 (23.4) | 54.7 (12.6) |
| June | 72.5 (22.5) | 82.6 (28.1) | 62.1 (16.7) |
| July | 77.2 (25.1) | 87.8 (31.0) | 66.7 (19.3) |
| August | 77.7 (25.4) | 88.9 (31.6) | 67.6 (19.8) |
| September | 69.8 (21.0) | 80.1 (26.7) | 60.8 (16.0) |
| October | 62.6 (17.0) | 72.0 (22.2) | 54.3 (12.4) |
| November | 54.3 (12.4) | 62.4 (16.9) | 47.3 (8.5) |
| December | 47.3 (8.5) | 54.9 (12.7) | 40.5 (4.7) |

The annual mean maximum is 69.8°F (21.0°C) and the annual mean minimum 51.6°F (10.9°C). ISPRA, working on a separate homogenized series for the same station and the same period, puts that annual minimum at 11.1°C against the 10.9°C of the WMO series: two independent datasets, one decimal apart.

## Rain: 622.6 mm a year, and almost none in July

Rome's own Ciampino series has no annual rainfall total at all: 3 summer months, June, July and August, fall under the threshold of 24 valid years. The complete Rome series comes from Fiumicino instead, at 16 feet (5 m): 622.6 mm a year, November the wettest month at 98.9 mm, July the driest at 12.3 mm.

Fiumicino month by month, in mm: 53.8, 57.9, 51.5, 46.7, 37.1, 18.7, 12.3, 23.3, 59.8, 90.0, 98.9, 72.6.

Fiumicino sits on the coast, Ciampino inland and a little higher, and in every month both publish, Ciampino comes out wetter: 112.8 mm against 98.9 in November, 91.8 against 90.0 in October. So the true annual total over the city is higher than 622.6 mm, by an amount nobody has published.

## The station is not the historic center

Ciampino stands at 423 feet (129 m) on the edge of the built-up area, and the WMO series is exactly what it says it is: an airport reading. The center of Rome runs hotter through the urban heat island, and these normals do not quantify that effect.

Practical translation: on an August afternoon the 88.9°F (31.6°C) mean maximum is the floor for what a stone piazza will give you, not the ceiling.

## FAQ

### What is the hottest month in Rome?

August, at a mean of 77.7°F (25.4°C), just ahead of July at 77.2°F (25.1°C). August also carries the highest mean daily maximum, 88.9°F (31.6°C). These are 1991-2020 normals measured at the Ciampino station.

### How cold does Rome get in winter?

January is the coldest month: mean 45.5°F (7.5°C), mean daily maximum 53.6°F (12.0°C), mean daily minimum 38.1°F (3.4°C). February sits a fraction higher. At those values, frost is not a normal feature of a Rome winter.

### When does it rain in Rome?

November is the wettest month at 98.9 mm, and July the driest at 12.3 mm, measured at the Fiumicino station over 1991-2020. The year totals 622.6 mm there. Rain in Rome is an autumn and winter business.

### What is the weather like in Rome in April?

April averages 56.5°F (13.6°C), with a mean daily maximum of 65.8°F (18.8°C) and a mean minimum of 47.5°F (8.6°C). Rainfall averages 46.7 mm for the month at Fiumicino, already below the winter values.

### Are these numbers a forecast?

No. They are 30-year climate normals for 1991-2020, the WMO standard, computed on Italian Air Force meteorological stations. Italy submitted 84 of them. They describe what a month looks like across three decades, not what next Tuesday will do.
