# Abruzzo: three parks and a glacier

> Three national parks, around 50 Marsican bears, Europe's southernmost glacier and 1.54% of Italy's overnight stays. What the numbers mean for a trip.

Abruzzo fits three national parks, a UNESCO Global Geopark and Europe's southernmost glacier into 4,182 square miles (10,832 sq km), and takes 1.54% of Italy's overnight stays.

## The scale of the region, in plain numbers

Abruzzo had 1,267,222 residents on January 1, 2026, in 305 towns. Chieti is the most populous province with 369,059 people; L'Aquila, the largest by area, has the fewest at 286,765.

In 2024 the region logged 7,176,204 overnight stays. That is 1.54% of the Italian total, on a territory that runs from the Adriatic to the highest peaks of the Apennines in under 60 miles (100 km).

## Where the bears are, and what that means for walking

The park authority puts the Marsican brown bear at 50 animals, in a range from 45 to 69. It's the largest bear population in Italy, it lives in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, and almost none of it lives anywhere else.

The park covers 50,500 hectares (195 square miles) with a contiguous belt of another 77,500, across 24 towns in three regions. It began as a private initiative in 1922 and was written into law in 1923 by Royal Decree 257, which makes it the oldest protected area in the Apennines. Thirty two rangers patrol it.

## Corno Grande, and the ice under it

The Calderone glacier occupies a north facing hollow beneath Corno Grande, 2,912 m (9,554 feet), and covers about five hectares. It holds the longitudinal and transverse crevasses of a real glacier, and it became the southernmost glacial body in Europe once the Sierra Nevada ice in Spain disappeared.

Corno Grande has four tops: Vetta Occidentale, Torrione Cambi, Vetta Centrale and Vetta Orientale. The whole massif sits in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, 150,000 hectares over Abruzzo, Lazio and Marche, set up under framework law 394/1991 and mapped in 1995.

## Saffron, sugared almonds, and the first DOCG

Zafferano dell'Aquila DOP has been in the EU register since February 5, 2005, and grows on the Navelli plateau east of L'Aquila. It's a hand picked crop on a few dozen hectares, which is why the price per gram looks like a mistake.

Sulmona makes confetti, the hard sugared almonds. The Poor Clares of Santa Chiara were tying them into flower shapes in the 15th century, and by 1846 the town counted about twelve factories. Their reputation abroad was built in the 20th century by Abruzzese emigrants in the United States, Canada and Australia.

Colline Teramane Montepulciano d'Abruzzo became the region's first DOCG on February 20, 2003, after holding DOC status since 1968. It comes from 31 towns in the province of Teramo, from at least 90% Montepulciano grapes.

## Transhumance, the grass roads, and Christmas arrivals

Transhumance was inscribed on the UNESCO intangible heritage list in 2019, on a joint Austrian, Greek and Italian nomination, and extended to ten countries in 2023. In Abruzzo it moved along the tratturi, grass roads wide enough for a flock: the Tratturo Magno ran from L'Aquila to Foggia, ending near the basilica of Collemaggio.

Those same valleys emptied through emigration, and the traffic runs back. US travelers who come to see relatives reach Abruzzo 20 times more often than US travelers on vacation, stay 11.9 nights instead of 8.7, and arrive in December and January. ## Two buildings and thirty machines

Rocca Calascio stands at 1,460 m (4,790 feet) in the Gran Sasso park, first named in a document of 1380 and rebuilt with its four round towers in the late 15th century. It's among the highest fortifications in Italy, and you finish the last stretch on foot.

Between Ortona and Vasto, more than thirty trabocchi still stand on the rocks: wooden fishing platforms with a walkway and two long arms holding the net. Several now serve dinner. Abruzzo has one World Heritage site, a share of the primeval beech forests inscribed in 2007 and split across seven regions: the full list is at UNESCO sites in Abruzzo.

### Can you see the Marsican bears in Abruzzo?

Sometimes, and never on a schedule. The park authority counts around 50 bears in a range between 45 and 69 animals, spread over 50,500 hectares. Guided evening watches from ridges above the valleys are the usual way people try. Treat a sighting as luck, not as an itinerary item.

### How many national parks does Abruzzo have?

Three national parks. Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise (50,500 hectares), Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga (150,000 hectares across three regions), and Maiella, which became a UNESCO Global Geopark on April 21, 2021 and now covers 39 towns.

### Is there really a glacier in central Italy?

Yes. The Calderone sits in a north facing bowl under Corno Grande, at 2,912 m, and covers about five hectares. It became the southernmost glacier body in Europe after the Sierra Nevada ice in Spain melted away. It is not a place for casual walkers.
