> Lombardy has more World Heritage sites than any other region, three airports around Milan, and two different driving restrictions in the same city.

Lombardy holds ten World Heritage sites, more than any other Italian region, and it is also the only place in Italy where one city runs two different driving restrictions at once.

## Ten listings, and almost no overlap between them

The ten listings run from 1979, the Valcamonica rock art, to 2017, the Venetian defense works. Santa Maria delle Grazie with Leonardo's Last Supper, inscribed in 1980; the Valcamonica rock art, 1979; Crespi d'Adda, 1995; the Sacri Monti shared with Piedmont, 2003; Monte San Giorgio, 2003; the Rhaetian Railway through the Albula and Bernina landscapes, 2008; Mantua and Sabbioneta, 2008; the Longobard sites, 2011; the prehistoric pile dwellings, 2011; and the Venetian defense works, 2017.

The practical consequence is that no single trip covers them all. A Milan base reaches three or four; the rest are in the Alps, on the Adda, or down on the Po plain.

## Valcamonica: 140,000 figures cut into rock

The Valcamonica carvings were inscribed in 1979 under criteria iii and vi, the earliest listing date of anything in this region. More than 140,000 symbols and figures are cut into the valley's glacier polished rock, over a span of more than 8,000 years.

The protected property is 432.3 hectares with a buffer zone of 1,018.23. It's a valley, not a museum, and the carvings are spread across several separate parks with their own gates and hours.

## Mantua and Sabbioneta, two opposite ideas

The two towns were inscribed together in 2008 under criteria ii and iii, because they answer the same Renaissance question in opposite ways. Mantua is a Roman city rebuilt from inside by the Gonzaga; Sabbioneta is a whole town founded from nothing on a grid.

Core zone 235 hectares, buffer zone 2,330. Sabbioneta has no railway station, so it takes a bus or a car, and that's most of the reason it stays empty. More at Mantua and Sabbioneta.

## Area C and Area B are not the same rule

Area C costs €7.50 a day for most vehicles, all year, Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm (07:30 to 19:30 on Italian signs), public holidays excluded. It is the limited traffic zone of central Milan, inside the Cerchia dei Bastioni ring, and cameras read the plate at every gate.

Area B is different in kind. It is a low emission zone, much larger, with no ticket at all: it bans the dirtiest vehicle classes outright, and the city says it addresses 65% of annual traffic emissions. A rental car can be free to enter one and barred from the other on the same morning, and the notice won't reach your home address for months. The general rule for Italian city centers is at [ZTL zones](/themes/ztl).

## Three airports, one name

Malpensa handled 31,385,585 passengers in 2025 and is where long haul lands. Linate, at 11,131,764, is the city airport. Bergamo Orio al Serio, at 16,937,976, is the country's main low cost base and is in Bergamo, not Milan, which the ticket doesn't usually make obvious.

Bergamo repays the mistake. The standard ATB urban ticket is €1.70 for 75 minutes and covers both funiculars, up to the walled upper town and on to San Vigilio. Day passes are €4.90 urban and €8.50 network wide, €14.50 for 72 hours.

## The lakes, the villages, the tax

One operator runs the public boats on Maggiore, Como and Garda, but the 2026 fares are published lake by lake. Gestione Navigazione Laghi handles all three, and the Como passenger and car ferry fares took effect on April 1, 2026.

Two of the nine UNESCO listed Sacri Monti are in Lombardy, at Ossuccio above Lake Como and at Varese; the other seven are in Piedmont. Crespi d'Adda, inscribed in 1995, is a company town from the turn of the 20th century left essentially intact, and it sits at Capriate San Gervasio in the province of Bergamo, not in Milan.

Milan's tourist tax has run from €3.00 to €12.00 per person per night since April 1, 2026, by accommodation category. Bresaola della Valtellina, the air dried beef of the province of Sondrio, has been IGP since July 2, 1996. The region logged 45,130,529 overnight stays in 2024, 9.68% of the national total.

## FAQ

### What is the difference between Area C and Area B in Milan?

Area C is a paid congestion zone inside the Cerchia dei Bastioni, with a €7.50 day ticket for most vehicles. Area B is a much larger low emission zone with no ticket at all: it simply bans the most polluting vehicles. A rental car can be legal in one and not the other.

### Which airport should I fly into for Milan?

Malpensa for long haul, at 31,385,585 passengers in 2025. Linate is closest to the center, at 11,131,764. Bergamo Orio al Serio, at 16,937,976, is the main low cost base and is not in Milan. Check which one your ticket says before booking a hotel transfer.

### How many World Heritage sites does Lombardy have?

Ten in 2026, more than any other Italian region. They range from the Valcamonica rock carvings, inscribed in 1979, to the Venetian defense works added in 2017, and include Leonardo's Last Supper, Crespi d'Adda, Monte San Giorgio, the Rhaetian Railway and Mantua with Sabbioneta.

### Do the lake boats run on one ticket system?

One operator, three separate systems. Gestione Navigazione Laghi runs the public boats on Como, Maggiore and Garda, but publishes timetables and fares lake by lake. The 2026 Como passenger and car ferry fares took effect on April 1, 2026.

### Are the Bergamo funiculars covered by a bus ticket?

Yes. The standard ATB urban ticket costs €1.70 and is valid 75 minutes on buses, trams and both funiculars, the one to the upper town and the one to San Vigilio. Tourist passes cost €4.90 for 24 hours in the urban area and €14.50 for 72 hours.
