# Marche: Urbino, Frasassi, and paper

Marche holds a walled Renaissance town on the World Heritage list, a cave chamber 200 m high, and the only Italian UNESCO Creative City recognized for paper, on 2.25% of the country's overnight stays.

## Two World Heritage sites, and the second one is new

Urbino's historic center was inscribed in 1998 under criteria ii and iv, on a core zone of just 29.23 hectares with a buffer of 3,608.5. The listing is the whole town inside its Renaissance walls, not only the Ducal Palace, which is the reason the streets themselves look designed.

The second listing arrived in 2026: the system of Italian style condominium theaters of central Italy, from the 18th and 19th centuries, shared with Umbria and Emilia-Romagna. These are the small horseshoe theaters built and owned collectively by the families of a town, and there are more of them here than anywhere.

## Urbino: €12, and a Monday to check

The Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, inside the Ducal Palace, costs €12 full and €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25, with an annual card at €30 and free entry on the first Sunday of the month. The 2026 ticket page gives Tuesday to Sunday, 8:30 am to 7:15 pm, ticket desk until 6:15 pm, closed Monday.

One caution, because two official pages disagree. A second listing gives a Monday afternoon opening, 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. If your itinerary depends on a Monday in Urbino, call before you commit to the train: two official pages can't both be right.

## Frasassi: a room that holds two million cubic meters

The first chamber of the Frasassi caves, the Abisso Ancona, measures 180 by 120 m and stands 200 m high, with a volume above 2 million cubic meters. Cavers from the CAI Ancona group reached it on September 25, 1971, and the caves opened to the public on September 1, 1974.

The tourist route is 1,500 m long and takes 75 minutes at a constant 57°F (14°C), which is the detail people get wrong in July. Tickets are €20 full, €18 reduced and €14 for ages 6 to 14, free under 6 and for residents of Genga. The two caving routes cost €40 for two hours and €50 for three.

## Fabriano has made paper since before the museum said so

Fabriano entered the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2013 in the Crafts and Folk Art category, for its craft tradition and specifically for handmade paper. Watermarking was industrialized here, and the technique is still demonstrated by hand.

The Museo della Carta e della Filigrana occupies the former convent of San Domenico and opens Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 am to 1:30 pm and 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, closed Monday, with the guided visit included in the ticket.

## Loreto and Recanati, a shrine and a house

The Pontifical Sanctuary of the Holy House at Loreto opens every day from 6:15 am to 7:30 pm, and the basilica around the Holy House was built between 1469 and 1587. Confessions run Monday to Saturday 8:00 am to noon and 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Sunday and holidays 7:00 am to noon and 3:00 pm to 7:30 pm.

Casa Leopardi at Recanati is a private house museum, still owned by the family. Giacomo Leopardi was born there on June 29, 1798, the first of seven children. The full guided visit of library, apartments and museum runs 45 minutes at €20 full and €13 reduced; the short library and museum route is 30 minutes at €10 and €8. It opens daily 9:00 am to 7:15 pm in 2026.

## Conero, the numbers, and who comes in winter

The Conero Regional Park covers 6,011 hectares across Ancona, Camerano, Numana and Sirolo, created in 1987 and operational since 1991, under a limestone headland that reaches 572 m (1,877 feet). It's the only real cliff on the Adriatic between Trieste and the Gargano.

Marche counted 1,482,746 residents at the end of 2023 in 225 towns and five provinces, with 461,629 of them, 31.1%, in the province of Ancona. Overnight stays were 10,481,674 in 2024, 2.25% of the national total.

One flow doesn't follow the beach season. US travelers visiting relatives reach Marche 10 times more often than US travelers on vacation, staying 11.9 nights instead of 8.7 and arriving in December and January. ### How cold is it inside the Frasassi caves?

A constant 57°F (14°C) all year, so you'll want a sweatshirt even in August. The tourist route is 1,500 m long and takes 75 minutes. Visitors with reduced mobility can reach the start of the second chamber, known as sala 200.

### How much are Frasassi tickets in 2026?

€20 full price, €18 reduced and €14 for ages 6 to 14 on the tourist route, free under 6. The reduced band covers ages 15 to 25, over 65s, CAI members, teachers and journalists. Caving routes are sold separately, at €40 and €50.

### Is the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino open on Monday?
