# Sicily: seven listings, two port systems

> Seven World Heritage sites spread across the island, current prices for the big archaeological parks, and how the ferry crossings actually work.

Sicily holds seven World Heritage sites and none of them are near each other, which makes the ferry timetable and the road map decide the itinerary more than the monuments do.

## Seven listings, spread across an island

The seven are the archaeological area of Agrigento, inscribed in 1997; the Villa Romana del Casale, 1997; the Aeolian Islands, 2000; the late Baroque towns of the Val di Noto, 2002; Syracuse with the rock necropolis of Pantalica, 2005; Mount Etna, 2013; and Arab Norman Palermo with the cathedrals of Cefalu and Monreale, 2015.

None of them is shared with another region, which is rare, and none of them is within a short hop of the next. Sicily logged 17,348,238 overnight stays in 2024, 3.72% of the national total, on an island the size of a small country.

## Agrigento: 1,300 hectares, and a late summer closing time

The archaeological and landscape park of the Valley of the Temples covers 1,300 hectares, among the largest archaeological complexes anywhere, and holds the remains of Akragas, whose foundation by Greek colonists from Gela and Rhodes is dated to 582 BC. Inscribed in 1997, it sits in a working landscape of centuries old olive and almond trees.

Hours are 8:30 am to 8:00 pm with last entry at 7:00 pm. From June 20 to September 20, 2026 it extends to 11:00 pm on weekdays, last entry 10:00 pm, and to midnight on holidays, last entry 11:00 pm. On the free first Sunday, free entry stops at 7:00 pm and the evening reverts to paid.

## The Aeolian Islands gave volcanology two words

The Aeolian archipelago was inscribed in 2000 under criterion viii, the geological one, over 1,216 hectares. Seven islands make it up, Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi and Panarea, plus five islets, less than 40 km off the northeastern coast.

Two eruption types are named after this place: vulcanian and strombolian. That's the whole reason for the listing, and it is also the reason ferry schedules here are weather dependent in a way that catches out anyone treating them as trains.

## Ticket prices for the big archaeological parks

The Greek theater at Taormina is €14 full and €7 reduced, free under 18, open daily 9:00 am to 7:45 pm with last entry at 7:00 pm; in summer evening openings it stays accessible to midnight, last entry 11:00 pm.

Segesta is €14 full, €16 when a temporary exhibition is running, and €7 reduced, and that ticket also covers five other sites in the same regional park: Mokarta, Monte Castellazzo, Rocca di Entella, San Miceli and the Grotte di Scurati. Selinunte is €14 and €7 with a compulsory €3 exhibition supplement, giving €17 and €10, and it opens between 8:00 and 9:00 am until sunset with the ticket office shutting between 4:30 and 7:00 pm depending on season.

The Villa Romana del Casale at Piazza Armerina costs €17 full and €10 reduced, both including a €3 exhibition supplement, open daily 9:00 am to 7:00 pm with the desk closing at 6:00 pm. From May 10 to September 21, 2026 there is an evening opening, 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm, at €10.

## The Scala dei Turchi: you email the town hall

The white marl cliff at Realmonte is open, but access is capped and you can't turn up without booking, and the booking channel is an email address at the municipality: settore5.realmonte@gmail.com, stating numbers, date and time. The ticket is €6 and is paid by card only, at the entrance.

The visit lasts 20 minutes and the last entry is 7:40 pm. It closes on weather alerts, in rain, and in rough sea. That isn't a formality: the closure decision is taken the same morning.

## Two port systems, and the crossing that matters

One authority manages 6 ports on the Strait as a single system, Messina, Villa San Giovanni, Reggio Calabria, Milazzo, Tremestieri and Saline, and the Villa San Giovanni to Messina crossing is by far the most used way of reaching Sicily by car. The western system, a separate authority, covers Palermo, Trapani, Termini Imerese, Porto Empedocle, Gela, Licata and Sciacca, with Palermo as its main passenger port.

By air, Catania Fontanarossa handled 12,369,485 passengers in 2025 and Palermo Punta Raisi 9,220,905. Between the two, the island is generally entered from the east or the west and crossed once, rather than circled.

## Climate, pistachios, and puppets

For western Sicily the nearest complete 1991 to 2020 records are Trapani Birgi, 7 m above sea level, with an annual mean of 64.6°F (18.1°C) and 488.9 mm of rain, and the island of Ustica at 242 m, 64.4°F (18.0°C) and 525.7 mm. July brings 2.9 to 3.9 mm, which is a dry month in the strict sense of the word, so don't plan around rain.

Pistachio from Bronte, on the slopes of Etna in the province of Catania, has been DOP since January 13, 2010. The Sicilian Opera dei Pupi is, with Sardinian canto a tenore, one of the two oldest Italian entries on the UNESCO intangible lists, both from 2008. ### Can you visit the Valley of the Temples at night?

In summer, yes. It opens daily 8:30 am to 8:00 pm with last entry at 7:00 pm, and from June 20 to September 20, 2026 it stays open to 11:00 pm on weekdays and midnight on holidays. On the free first Sunday, entry is free only until 7:00 pm.

### How do you book the Scala dei Turchi?
