# Tuscany: nine listings, 46 million nights

Tuscany carries nine World Heritage sites and 46,220,821 overnight stays a year, 9.92% of the Italian total, and two of the nine listings are farmland rather than architecture.

## Nine sites, and what they are

Florence's historic center went on the list in 1982, the Piazza del Duomo at Pisa in 1987, San Gimignano in 1990, Siena in 1995, Pienza in 1996, the Val d'Orcia in 2004, the primeval beech forests in 2007, the Medici villas and gardens in 2013, and Montecatini Terme as part of the great spa towns of Europe in 2021.

That mix explains the crowding pattern. Two of the nine are cities that everyone visits, and the rest absorb a small fraction of the same traffic even in July.

## The Val d'Orcia is a farmed landscape, and that is the listing

The Val d'Orcia was inscribed in 2004 as a cultural landscape under criteria iv and vi, over 61,187.96 hectares with a buffer zone of 5,660.08. What is protected is a farming system redesigned in the 14th and 15th centuries: clay plains with conical hills carrying fortified villages, isolated farmhouses, and the Via Francigena with its abbeys.

Five municipalities are inside it, all in the province of Siena: Castiglione d'Orcia, Montalcino, Pienza, Radicofani and San Quirico d'Orcia. There's no gate and no ticket, and the cypress avenues people drive out to photograph are private farm entrances.

## San Gimignano: 14 towers and one pass

The historic center of San Gimignano was inscribed in 1990 under criteria i, iii and iv, on 13.88 hectares. Fourteen towers still stand out of an estimated 72 put up between the 11th and 13th centuries by merchant families as displays of wealth.

The town doesn't sell individual monument tickets. The San Gimignano Pass costs €15, or €12 for ages 6 to 17, is valid three days, and covers the Collegiata complex, Palazzo Comunale with the Pinacoteca and the Torre Grossa, the Santa Chiara complex and the church of San Lorenzo in Ponte. ## Pienza: 4.41 hectares, redesigned from 1459

Pienza's historic center is the smallest of the Tuscan listings, inscribed in 1996 under criteria i, ii and iv on 4.41 hectares. Pope Pius II, born Enea Silvio Piccolomini, had his home village redrawn from 1459 by Bernardo Rossellino, a pupil of Leon Battista Alberti, with an estimated 40 buildings built or rebuilt.

It's the first application of humanist ideal city principles to a real town, which is a heavy claim for a place you can cross in ten minutes. That contrast is the visit.

## Chianti Classico is a boundary, not a style

The Chianti Classico production zone runs across 70,000 hectares between the provinces of Florence and Siena. Four municipalities are inside it entirely, Castellina, Gaiole, Greve and Radda in Chianti, and four in part, Barberino Tavarnelle, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Poggibonsi and San Casciano in Val di Pesa.

The Gallo Nero, the black rooster, is compulsory on every bottle, which makes it the fastest way to check in a shop whether what you're holding comes from inside those boundaries or from the much larger Chianti area outside them. Pecorino Toscano DOP has been in the EU register since July 2, 1996.

## Who fills Tuscany, and a claim worth correcting

Florence takes 14.6% of all nights that American travelers spend in Italy, second only to Rome at 25.5%, inside a national figure where 60.3% of American nights fall in five towns. The pressure on Florence isn't a perception, it's a concentration.

The French, by contrast, are below average here. Their regional index for Tuscany is 0.98, and for Lazio 0.87, while Sicily sits at 2.52 and Puglia at 2.48. The idea that the French flood Tuscany because it's close doesn't survive the data: they go south.

Pisa Galileo Galilei handled 5,977,227 passengers in 2025 and Florence Peretola 3,847,658, and the fastest direct high speed train from Rome reaches Florence in one hour and 35 minutes. Florence's tourist tax starts at €3.50 per person per night in a one star hotel, set on December 10, 2024 and effective from February 1, 2025, with exemptions for under 12s and for University of Florence students.
