# Aosta Valley: the smallest region > Italy's smallest region has no World Heritage site, the country's first national park, and two official languages that change the names on the road signs. URL: https://myitalia.it/regions/valle-d-aosta Last updated: 2026-09-02 The Aosta Valley covers 3,260.9 square kilometers with 122,451 residents, which makes it the smallest and least populated Italian region, and one of only two with no World Heritage site. ## What "smallest" means here The region has 74 municipalities and no provinces, an unusual arrangement that puts every town in direct contact with the regional government. Population density is 37.55 people per square kilometer, the lowest in Italy. Altitude does most of the work. The lowest ground is at 345 m and the highest point is Mont Blanc at 4,808.72 m, 15,777 feet, so the region contains a range of climate zones that elsewhere would take a thousand kilometers of latitude. ## No World Heritage site, and what that changes The Aosta Valley and Molise are the only two Italian regions without a World Heritage site in 2026. That's a fact about the list, not about the place, and it has one practical consequence: nothing here carries the traffic that a listing generates. Overnight stays came to 3,695,059 in 2024, 0.79% of the national total, and most of them are ski and hiking nights rather than sightseeing nights. Roman Aosta, the castles and the high valleys don't move at Florence's volume. ## Gran Paradiso, the first national park in Italy Gran Paradiso was created in 1922 on the former Savoy royal hunting reserve and covers 71,044 hectares across thirteen municipalities in the Aosta Valley and Piedmont. Fewer than 300 people live inside the boundary; 8,160 live in the thirteen towns. The numbers inside it are worth having. Gran Paradiso itself, 4,061 m, is the only summit above 4,000 m entirely on Italian soil. The park holds 59 glaciers, 183 lakes, 168 vertebrate species and 553 km of marked trails, 65% of which follow the royal hunting mule tracks. That last figure explains why the gradients are so even: the paths were built for a king on a mule, not for a mountaineer. ## Skyway Monte Bianco: €63 to 3,466 m The Skyway climbs from Pontal d'Entreves at 1,300 m to Punta Helbronner at 3,466 m, with an intermediate stop at the Pavillon du Mont Frety, 2,173 m. The return fare is €63 in high season and €59 in low, on tariffs valid to November 1, 2026. That is a gain of 2,166 m in two stages, which is more than most people have done before lunch. The double crenellated walls and the towers are theatrical: the building's real job was administrative prestige. It has belonged to the state since 1895, you can't see it except on a guided visit, and it passes 80,000 visitors a year, which for this region is a crowd. This is parity, not minority protection, and it shows up on the road signs, in place names and in public paperwork, which is why the same village appears twice in two spellings. Fontina DOP, made from raw milk in this valley, has been in the EU register since June 21, 1996.
