Several Italian cities run cable-hauled lines as ordinary public transport: Trento's cable car to Sardagna has done so since August 4, 1925, Bolzano's Renon cable car sends a cabin every 4 minutes, and in Bergamo both funiculars take the €1.70 urban ticket (2026).

## Trento: four minutes to Sardagna, since 1925

The Sardagna cable car has run from Trento since August 4, 1925, and it is still part of the city's transport network, operated by Trentino trasporti. The ride covers 1,200 metres of line and about 400 metres of height in four minutes, in cabins for 13 people.

The system was rebuilt in 1960, and it has one weakness: on days of strong wind the cabins stop and a bus takes over. Carry that in mind if you plan a late return from the hamlet above the city.

Service hours are given only as approximate, 7:00 am to 10:30 pm, and the operator's website refuses automated reading, so fares and times need checking there directly. It's the rare case of a century-old line whose timetable is harder to read than its history.

## Bolzano: 4,541 metres to Soprabolzano

The Renon cable car climbs from Bolzano, at 274 m, to Soprabolzano, at 1,222 m, over 4,541 metres of line in about 12 minutes, with a cabin every 4 minutes. That is a bus frequency, not a ski lift's.

The current installation is a 3S system in service since May 23, 2009, replacing a first line opened in 1966. Cabins hold 35 people and the line moves 550 an hour. At Soprabolzano the Renon train continues to Collalbo.

The official tourism page confirms the time and the frequency but doesn't publish fares, so this page doesn't either.

## Bergamo: the funicular is on the bus ticket

In Bergamo the ATB ordinary urban ticket costs €1.70, is valid for 75 minutes, and covers buses, the tram and both funiculars, to Città Alta and to San Vigilio (2026). The funicular to the upper town has no ticket of its own.

That makes the ride up to Città Alta a normal commute. The 75 minutes also cover a return if you're quick, and for a full day the passes are €4.90 for 24 hours in the urban area, €8.50 for 24 hours on the whole network and €14.50 for 72 hours.

## Trieste: a tram pushed uphill

The Opicina tram, line 2, climbs from central Trieste to the Karst plateau over 5.175 km, and for a stretch of about 800 metres it is pushed by a funicular up gradients of 26%. The source calls the arrangement unique in Europe.

Its recent history is a warning. The line stopped after an accident on August 16, 2016, reopened on February 1, 2025, stopped again on October 12, 2025 for a rope fault, and resumed on July 27, 2026 with a provisional terminus in piazza Dalmazia. It isn't accessible by wheelchair, and it takes normal Trieste tickets, with contactless payment on board.

## Perugia: the same hill problem, solved on rails

Perugia's MiniMetro links the car park at Pian di Massiano to the Pincetto station in the old centre along 3,020 metres, climbing 160.6 metres at gradients of up to 11.5%. Cars for 50 people pass every two and a half minutes.

It runs from 7:00 am to its last departure at 9:05 pm on weekdays and 9:00 am to 8:45 pm on holidays (2026). It isn't a cable car in the air, but it answers the same question: how to put a hilltop city on a timetable.

## What these lines have in common

All five are local transport first and sights second, which changes how you use them. You buy the city's ticket where one exists, and you accept that wind, rope faults or maintenance can suspend a line without much notice.

Check fares on the operator's own site for Trento and the Renon, since neither is published in a form we could verify. The cities are at [Trento](/towns/trento), [Bolzano](/towns/bolzano), [Perugia](/towns/perugia) and [Trieste](/towns/trieste), and Bergamo sits in [Lombardy](/regions/lombardia).

## FAQ

### Is the Trento to Sardagna cable car public transport?

Yes. It's an urban line run by Trentino trasporti, in service since August 4, 1925, covering 1,200 m in four minutes with 13-person cabins. On days of strong wind a bus replaces it. The operator's site blocks automated reading, so check fares there.

### How often does the Renon cable car run?

A cabin leaves every 4 minutes, and the ride from Bolzano at 274 m to Soprabolzano at 1,222 m takes about 12 minutes over 4,541 m. The current 3S system has run since May 23, 2009. The official page doesn't publish fares.

### Do you need a separate ticket for the Bergamo funicular?

No. The ATB ordinary urban ticket, €1.70 and valid 75 minutes, covers buses, the tram and both funiculars, to Città Alta and to San Vigilio (2026). A 24 hour urban pass costs €4.90.

### Is the Opicina tram in Trieste running?

It resumed service on July 27, 2026, with a provisional terminus in piazza Dalmazia, after stopping on October 12, 2025 for a rope fault. The line has been unstable since an accident in 2016, so check its status before you plan a day on it.
