No line of the national railway network reaches Matera: the city is served only by the narrow-gauge Ferrovie Appulo Lucane railway from Bari, and the RFI link under construction is planned to open in 2028.

## The national network stops short

Matera has no connection to the RFI network in 2026, which means no Trenitalia or Italo train can physically arrive there.

The line being built to fix that is the Ferrandina to Matera La Martella, 20 km of single electrified track, at an investment of 525 million euro partly funded by the national recovery plan.

Its timeline is documented: design in 2019, authorizations and tender in 2022, works started in 2023, activation planned for 2028. That is a 9-year sequence for 20 km, which is itself a piece of information about how infrastructure moves in the Italian south.

## The claim you will read everywhere

Matera is described almost universally as the only Italian provincial capital without a railway, and that claim is not confirmed on any official source we could open.

It appears in press coverage and on general sites, and it may well be correct. It is not verified, so this page does not assert it, and neither should any page that has not checked it.

What is verified is narrower and enough: no RFI line reaches Matera, and the FAL narrow-gauge railway is its only rail link.

## Bari to Matera runs on a different gauge

The only rail link to Matera is operated by Ferrovie Appulo Lucane on a narrow-gauge network, separate from the national system in track, rolling stock and ticketing.

The 2024 to 2033 service contract between the Basilicata Region and FAL sets a direct journey of 1 hour 25 minutes, against 1 hour 42 before. Take that figure as a contractual target announced in December 2023 rather than a timetable you can check today.

The same contract covers 5 new battery trains for the Matera metropolitan service, 12.5 million euro of rolling stock, 9 million euro of infrastructure and 330,000 euro of passenger technology, and lifts service kilometers in Matera from 32,873 to 80,940.

## Sunday trains, and summer closures

Sunday services on the line were scheduled to begin in September 2026, which means that until then the standard weekend assumption did not apply here.

The line also closes for planned works. The Bari Centrale to Grumo Appula section reopened on August 31, 2026 after a summer shutdown for extraordinary maintenance, with replacement buses running until August 30.

That is the operating pattern to plan for: a regional railway with programmed interruptions, so check the operator's service notices before you fix an arrival time. The number of daily runs between Bari and Matera is not published in a static timetable we could read, and no figure for it is given here.

## Campobasso is the other face of the same problem

0 trains from Rome reach Campobasso: in the 2026 Trenitalia timetable, every solution ends with a replacement bus on the Boiano to Campobasso section.

The fastest combination takes 3 hours 23 minutes and costs 17.75 euro, with regional solutions running 3 hours 23 to 3 hours 48. One worked example: Roma Termini 09:07 on regional 23365, Boiano at about midday, bus CB604, Campobasso 12:30.

No Frecce or Italo service reaches Campobasso at all. High-speed options get you to Naples, Caserta or Benevento and then hand you to a bus.

## What this means if you do not drive

2 regional capitals in the Italian south, Matera and Campobasso, cannot be reached by a national train, and the answers are different in each case.

For Matera, the answer is Bari and the FAL line, which is a real railway with a real timetable, subject to works notices. For Campobasso, the answer is a train to Boiano and a bus, priced and timetabled as a single ticket.

Neither is a hardship, and both need to be planned rather than assumed. For the cities themselves, see [Matera](/towns/matera) and [Campobasso](/towns/campobasso).

## FAQ

### Does Matera have a train station?

Yes, but not on the national network. Matera is served only by the narrow-gauge Ferrovie Appulo Lucane line from Bari, whose direct run is contracted at 1 hour 25 minutes. No RFI line reaches the city, so no Trenitalia or Italo service can arrive there.

### When will Matera be connected to the national railway?

2028 is the planned activation. The new Ferrandina to Matera La Martella line is 20 km of single electrified track costing 525 million euro, partly from the national recovery plan, with works under way since 2023.

### How do you get from Bari to Matera by train?

On the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane narrow-gauge line. The 2024 to 2033 service contract targets a direct run of 1 hour 25 minutes, against 1 hour 42 before. Sunday services were due to start in September 2026.

### Is Matera really the only Italian provincial capital without a railway?

The claim is repeated constantly in the press and is not confirmed on any official source we could open, so this site does not assert it. What is verified is that no RFI line reaches Matera, that the FAL narrow-gauge line is its only rail link, and that the 20 km RFI connection is planned for 2028.

### Can you reach Campobasso by train from Rome?

Not all the way. In the 2026 Trenitalia timetable every solution ends with a replacement bus on the Boiano to Campobasso section. The fastest takes 3 hours 23 minutes at 17.75 euro, and no high-speed service reaches the city.
