The stands built around the perimeter are sold, and so are the windows and balconies, which belong to private owners and are let privately. That is the whole economics of the Palio in one line, and it is the reverse of what most events do. The cheap place is the middle of the arena; the expensive places are the ones with a chair. What you trade for the free ground is time and space. You stand, you are boxed in by the crowd, and once the entrances to the piazza are closed the ring is the ring for the duration. ## The race is 3 laps, bareback The horses run 3 laps of Piazza del Campo and the riders have no saddle. That is the entire sporting definition, and it takes a fraction of the time you will spend waiting for it. Before it, the Corteo Storico crosses the city with more than 600 participants, setting off from Piazza del Duomo in the early afternoon. The procession is the long part of the day and the race is the short part. Ten of the seventeen contrade run in each Palio, so the field is never the whole city. The organizer is the Comune of Siena, not a federation or a private promoter. ## Two fixed dates: July 2 and August 16 The Palio is run twice a year on fixed dates: July 2, the Palio di Provenzano, and August 16, the Palio dell'Assunta. These do not move with the calendar the way Easter does. If bad weather stops the race, it slides to the following day. That is the only variation the official rules provide for, and it is worth a spare night in your booking if you have come for this. American travel peaks in July, with 39.7% of American nights falling between June and August, so the July 2 race sits at the front of the season most of you actually travel in. ## Nobody publishes the time the square closes Nothing official states the hour by which you must be inside Piazza del Campo, and the only time published for the day is the early-afternoon start of the Corteo Storico and its 600 participants. We have looked for the rest, and the gap is real: a page that gives you a precise closing time is inventing it. Everything you read about how early to arrive is crowd experience passed between visitors, not a published rule, and it is worth reading as such. Treat that as a planning constraint rather than a defect. Decide whether you want the free ground or a seat, and if it is the free ground, build the whole day around being inside early. ## The origin story that the Comune refuses to fix The Comune of Siena states that no certain date exists for the origin of the Palio, and the earliest form it documents, the palii alla lunga run through the streets rather than around the square, belongs to the early 1300s. The race closed the mid-August feast of the Assumption. The word itself comes from pallium, the length of fine cloth given to the winner. That much is settled. Two dates you will see repeated everywhere, 1656 for the race in the square and 1701 for the August edition, do not appear on the official page. This page leaves them out.
