The Italic sanctuary of Pietrabbondante is the greatest architectural work of the Samnite Pentri, built at around 1,000 metres on Monte Caraceno in Molise, and it opens Tuesday to Sunday from 8:45 am to 7:00 pm, with a €6 full ticket and €2 reduced (2026).

## A temple and a theatre on a mountainside

The main complex is Temple B and the theatre, both built between the end of the 2nd and the beginning of the 1st century BC.

The first three rows of the theatre keep their stone seats with shaped backrests and armrests carved as lion's paws. They are the detail that makes the place feel occupied rather than ruined.

Around them are inscriptions in Oscan, the language the Samnites wrote, a Domus publica, and a treasury dating from the end of the 3rd century BC. The official source doesn't publish how many people the theatre held, so this page gives no capacity.

## The people who built it

The Pentri were one of the Samnite peoples of the central Apennines, and Pietrabbondante was their showcase: the managing body calls it the highest architectural expression of the Samnite Pentri. It stands at the Calcatello locality, run by the regional directorate of national museums of Molise.

The Samnites fought Rome for decades before they lost. What you see at Pietrabbondante is what they built while they still had the means and the independence to build it on this scale.

## Where Rome arrived: Saepinum

The Roman conquest of Saepinum came in 293 BC, during the third Samnite war, and the Roman town that grew there is now the archaeological area of Altilia-Saepinum at Sepino. It has a forum, a basilica, a theatre and four town gates, Porta Bojano and Porta Terravecchia among them.

The town was placed at a crossroads, where the Pescasseroli-Candela sheep track met the road from the Matese massif to the Tammaro plain. Where the Samnites built a sanctuary on a mountain, the Romans built a town on a junction.

Saepinum is open every day from 8:15 am to 7:15 pm. Since March 1, 2026 entry has been temporarily free because of works in progress; the ordinary fare is €10 full and €2 for ages 18 to 25, and it will return when the works end.

## 586,000 years, not 700,000

At Isernia, the national Paleolithic museum keeps the finds of the Isernia La Pineta site, where a milk tooth from a child of 5 or 6 was found and dated to 586,000 years ago. That is the figure of the museum's managing body.

Tourist sites often say 700,000 years. That older number comes from earlier estimates of the site's chronology and doesn't appear on the ministry source, so this page uses 586,000.

The site was discovered in 1978. The museum preserves a 300 square metre living floor with almost 6,000 original objects, and traces of bison and rhinoceros butchery, the skinning of a bear, flint working and bones split for marrow. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 8:15 am to 7:00 pm, at €6 full and €2 reduced (2026).

## Getting to Molise without a car

Isernia is the only Molise city with direct trains from Rome: five regional trains a day from Roma Termini, taking 2 hours 5 to 2 hours 19 minutes, for €14.05 (2026). On the weekday checked they left at 6:15, 9:07, 13:07, 14:35 and 20:07.

From Isernia onwards, the verified data for this page stops. Public transport to Pietrabbondante and to Sepino isn't covered, so plan on a car or ask the museums about local links before you travel.

## A Monday problem, and the fix

Pietrabbondante and the Isernia museum both close on Mondays, while Saepinum opens every day. If your Molise days include a Monday, give it to Saepinum and keep the Samnite sanctuary and the Paleolithic museum for the rest of the week.

## FAQ

### When is the Pietrabbondante sanctuary open?

Tuesday to Sunday, 8:45 am to 7:00 pm, closed on Mondays (2026). A full ticket costs €6 and a reduced one €2. Some secondary sites list shorter hours, 10:15 to 17:15, which probably refer to winter, so check before a cold-season visit.

### How old is the child's tooth found at Isernia La Pineta?

586,000 years, according to the national Paleolithic museum in Isernia. The 700,000 years that circulates on tourist sites comes from older estimates of the site's chronology. The milk tooth belonged to a child of 5 or 6.

### Can you get to Pietrabbondante by train from Rome?

Only as far as Isernia: five direct regional trains a day leave Roma Termini, taking 2 hours 5 to 2 hours 19 minutes for €14.05 (2026). Onward public transport to Pietrabbondante isn't covered by the data verified for this page.

### Is Saepinum free to visit?

Temporarily, yes: since March 1, 2026 entry to the Roman site of Altilia-Saepinum at Sepino has been free because of works in progress. The ordinary fare is €10 full and €2 reduced, and the site opens every day from 8:15 am to 7:15 pm.
