## The monthly curve, in one column

The declared figures for 2026 run: January 1,619, February 2,703, March 4,988, April 25,178, May 71,614, June 97,681, July 109,552. Total 315,509 overnight stays from 94,890 guests, worth €759,578.50 in declared tax, as filed on August 24, 2026.

April is where the year turns. From 4,988 in March to 25,178 in April is the moment the town changes function, and May at 71,614 is already most of the way to the peak.

Two numbers give the scale of what a town of 5,668 residents absorbs: 109,552 overnight stays in July, and 1,619 in January.

## What these numbers are, and are not

These 315,509 overnight stays are declarations made for the tourist tax, not presences measured by the regional tourism observatory. They undercount, because they exclude residents and any accommodation that failed to file.

August and the months after it were not yet declared when the report was generated, on August 24, 2026, so the peak month of the year is missing from the series. The comune's own estimate, in its 2025 rate resolution, is 400,000 to 500,000 presences a year.

Read the series for the shape, not for the volume. As a measure of seasonality it is unusually good, because the same filing rule applies in every month.

## The tax, and the rates that are still 2025

Tropea charges €1 per night per star in hotels and holiday villages, €2 per night in rooms-to-let and B&Bs, and €1.50 per night in other accommodation, campsites, agriturismi, holiday homes, residences, hostels and boats moored in the port included. Prices on this page are in euros.

It is charged for a maximum of 15 consecutive nights and children under 12 are exempt. Exempt nights were 4.39% of the total, and 86.96% of those exemptions were under 12s.

One honest caveat: the most recent rates published as of September 1, 2026 are the 2025 ones, set by resolution 128 of October 23, 2024, which confirmed rates already in force. Treat them as the latest published, not as 2026 rates. The tax has applied since January 1, 2013.

## Where the guests sleep

4-star hotels take 27.38% of declared overnight stays, rooms-to-let 22.18%, furnished apartments 13.35%, B&Bs 10.54%, 3-star hotels 8.11% and holiday homes 7.70%.

That mix explains the tax structure. A 4-star hotel night costs €4 in tax, a room-to-let night costs €2 flat regardless of category, and the difference is small enough that nobody chooses accommodation because of it.

It also tells you what the town is built of: not resorts, but a large stock of small units. Which is why capacity in July is elastic and service in January is not.

## A rock the comune puts at 60 meters

The old town of Tropea sits on a rock the comune describes as around 60 meters above the Tyrrhenian, on the Costa degli Dei in the province of Vibo Valentia.

That figure comes from the comune's own site and is not a surveyed topographic measurement, so it is quoted here with its source attached. The town's population is 5,668 at January 1, 2026 by ISTAT estimate, against 5,822 declared by the comune at December 31, 2024.
