Each theme below exists because a measured quantity sits under it, not because it makes an appealing heading.

## The test a theme has to pass

Italy protects 330 agri-food names, 174 DOP and 156 IGP, which is what makes food a theme here rather than a mood. The same test applies to every entry in this section: there has to be a published figure, a public register or a legal instrument underneath it, or the theme does not get a page. Several themes that every Italian tourism site carries are missing here for exactly that reason.

## Where the themes cut across the regions

24 of Italy's national parks are operational while 27 appear on the official list, the difference being two parks with provisional boundaries and one that was established and never made operational. A theme page can follow something the region pages cannot: the parks that straddle borders, the roots travel that brings 442,000 Americans a year to see relatives, the protected names that follow a supply chain instead of an administrative line.
