# Italy's museums: who counts what

> State museums drew 60,850,091 visitors in 2024 and Lazio took half. Why Sicily is missing from the national table, and what the 4,416 figure covers.

Italy's state museums, monuments and archaeological areas recorded 60,850,091 visitors in 2024, the highest in the series, but that number covers 453 institutions out of the 4,416 museums ISTAT counts in the country, and three regions do not appear in it at all.

## Two counts, two perimeters

The Ministry of Culture surveyed 453 state institutions in 2024: 299 charging admission and 154 free, of which 203 are museums proper and the rest monuments, archaeological areas and museum circuits. Those are the places in every national ranking you have read.

ISTAT counts a different universe: 4,416 museums and similar institutions open to the public in 2022, made of 3,392 museums and galleries, 298 archaeological areas or parks and 726 monuments or monumental complexes. Civic, diocesan, university and private museums live in the second number and not in the first.

## Where the visitors actually go

Lazio absorbed 29,729,231 visitors of state cultural sites in 2024, close to half the national total, followed by Campania with 10,288,474 and Tuscany with 9,106,895. Piedmont, at 2,558,188, is fourth, and the gap to the top three is the shape of Italian cultural tourism in one column of figures.

The tail is long and thin: Molise recorded 94,735 visitors, Abruzzo 192,101, Liguria 222,420. The Colosseum archaeological park alone, at 14,733,395 visitors, took more than every region except Lazio, Campania and Tuscany.

## Three regions that never appear

3 regions are missing from the ministry's table, Valle d'Aosta, Trentino-Alto Adige and Sicily, because heritage there is run by the region or by the autonomous provinces rather than by the state. Only 17 of the 20 are surveyed.

The consequence is concrete: the Valley of the Temples, Villa del Casale and the theater at Taormina are not in any national top thirty, not because they are small but because nobody in Rome counts them. Any ranking of Italian museums that lacks a Sicilian site is using this data without saying so.

## What the tickets bring in

Gross receipts at state cultural sites reached 382,004,344.75 euro in 2024, 21.7% up on the 313,888,163.71 euro of 2023, with 331,734,246.26 euro net. Of the 60,850,091 visitors, 31,784,116 paid and 29,065,975 did not.

Almost half of admissions are free, and that is by design: reduced categories, school groups, children and the free Sundays. Entry to state museums is free on the first Sunday of each month, plus a few extra dates a year; the [free museum days page](/plan/free-museum-days) sets out what that covers.

## The museums that are nowhere near a city

1,740 of the 4,416 Italian museums, 39.4% of them, stand in municipalities classified as inner areas, far from the main service centers. That is where the ratio of museums to visitors breaks down completely.

It also explains a practical problem: many of them open on short or seasonal hours and are hard to reach without a car. Opening times on this site carry the date they were checked, listed on the [opening hours page](/plan/opening-hours).

## FAQ

### How many museums does Italy have?

Two answers, both correct. ISTAT counted 4,416 museums and similar institutions open to the public in 2022, including civic, church, university and private ones. The Ministry of Culture runs 453 of them, which is the set that appears in the national visitor statistics.

### Which is the most visited museum in Italy?

The Colosseum archaeological park, with 14,733,395 visitors in 2024 and 101.9 million euro in gross receipts. The Uffizi follow with 5,294,968 visitors and Pompeii with 4,267,233.

### Why is Sicily missing from Italian museum rankings?

Because its heritage is run by the region, not the state, so its sites never enter the ministry's survey of 453 institutions. The same applies to Valle d'Aosta and Trentino-Alto Adige: only 17 regions are counted, which is why the Valley of the Temples is absent.

### When are Italian state museums free?

On the first Sunday of every month, under the ministry's Domenica al Museo scheme, plus a few extra days a year. It covers only the 453 state institutions, of which 154 are already free, so civic and church museums keep charging.

### How much do Italian state museums earn?

382,004,344.75 euro gross in 2024, up 21.7% on 2023, with 331,734,246.26 euro net. Of 453 state institutions, 299 charge admission and 154 are free.
