Catania sits under a volcano whose summit is a World Heritage site, and the highest point you can reach without technical climbing is 3,000 meters, in three stages: cable car, 4x4 bus, then on foot with a guide.

## What is listed, and what the listing covers

Mount Etna went on the World Heritage list in 2013 under natural criterion (viii), and the inscribed property is the uninhabited summit portion of the volcano: 19,237 hectares, with a buffer zone of 26,220 hectares.

The argument for it was continuity of record. Eruptions here have been documented for at least 2,700 years, one of the longest written series anywhere on earth, which makes the mountain a laboratory as much as a landmark. See [nobody agrees how tall Etna is](/stories/nobody-agrees-how-tall-etna-is).

## The park came first, in 1987

The Parco dell'Etna was set up by decree of the president of the Sicilian region on March 17, 1987, the first regional park in Sicily, covering 59,000 hectares with its office at Nicolosi.

Park and World Heritage site are not the same boundary, and the park is the larger of the two. Most of what a visitor does, the lava fields, the chestnut woods, the villages on the flanks, happens inside the park and outside the inscribed zone.

## Three stages to 3,000 meters

The cable car, the only one on the volcano, leaves Rifugio Sapienza on the southern side at 1,920 m and lands at 2,500 m. From there the Tour 3000 goes on by 4x4 bus, replaced by snowcat in winter, to 2,800 m, and the final stretch is walked with a volcanological guide to 3,000 m (2026).

Dress for the altitude and not for Sicily. There are 1,080 meters of climb between the base station and the top of that itinerary, and the summit area is exposed, cold and often above the cloud.

## The airport bus, and the ticket that is not valid

The Alibus run by AMT is the city link from Catania Fontanarossa, and the ticket costs €4, valid 90 minutes, usable on the other AMT urban lines too. You can buy it on board with cash or card, in the AMT Catania app, at authorized resellers or at partner hotels. Prices in euros.

Here is the trap that catches people twice a day: ordinary AMT tickets, FCE metro tickets and ordinary season passes are not valid on the Alibus. A ticket bought in town for the metro will not get you to the plane. See [getting to Catania](/towns/catania/getting-there).

## Taormina, every 30 minutes, from the airport

Interbus runs direct coaches between Catania Fontanarossa and Taormina every 30 minutes in 2026, and that is the connection most people without a car actually use.

The reason is geography. Taormina-Giardini railway station lies at sea level below the old town, so arriving by train leaves you with a climb, a local bus or a taxi at the end. The coach sets you down at the Taormina bus terminal, up the hill. More at [things to do in Catania](/towns/catania/things-to-do) and [Sicily](/regions/sicilia).

## FAQ

### How high can you get on Etna without climbing gear?

3,000 meters, on foot with a volcanological guide. The cable car takes you from Rifugio Sapienza at 1,920 m to 2,500 m, then the Tour 3000 continues by 4x4 bus, or snowcat in winter, to 2,800 m, and the last stretch is walked with the guide (2026).

### Is Mount Etna a UNESCO site?

Yes, inscribed in 2013 under natural criterion (viii). The listed area is the uninhabited summit zone, 19,237 hectares with a buffer of 26,220. Part of the case was the record: Etna's eruptions have been documented for at least 2,700 years.

### How do you get from Catania airport into the city?

The AMT Alibus. The ticket costs €4, lasts 90 minutes and also works on other AMT city lines. Buy it on board with cash or card, in the AMT Catania app, at a licensed reseller or at a partner hotel. Ordinary AMT and FCE metro tickets are not valid on it.

### What is the easiest way from Catania to Taormina?

The direct Interbus coach from Catania Fontanarossa airport, running every 30 minutes in 2026. It beats the train because Taormina-Giardini station sits down at sea level, well below the old town, so arriving by rail adds a climb or a second bus.

### How big is the Etna park?

59,000 hectares, with its office at Nicolosi in the province of Catania. It was created by decree of the president of the Sicilian region on March 17, 1987, the first regional park in Sicily, and it is wider than the World Heritage core zone inside it.
