# Rome: three sites that will not let you improvise

Three of the sites people add late to a Rome trip cannot be improvised: the Galleria Borghese books every ticket including the free ones, the Vatican Museums charge €5.00 on top to reserve a slot, and the Trevi basin has cost €2.00 since February 2, 2026.

## Galleria Borghese: two hour turns, booked, always

Booking is compulsory for every category at the Galleria Borghese, including the free ticket for under 18s, and the reservation itself costs a fixed €2.00 (2026). Visits run in turns of two hours with a ceiling on visitors per turn.

Full entry is €16.00, or €11.00 on the shortened last turn at 5:45 pm, with €2.00 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25. Opening is Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, closed Mondays, December 25 and January 1. Telephone booking is on +39 06 32810, Monday to Friday 9:30 am to 6:00 pm.

The per turn capacity we read on the official page is 180 people, and it is the weakest number on this page: treat it as indicative and the two hour turn as the binding constraint. Two hours is enough for this collection and not enough for a leisurely one, so arrive at the start of your slot rather than in the middle of it.

## The Vatican Museums: €20.00, and €5.00 to choose your hour

Entry is €20.00 full, with €5.00 added if you reserve the skip the line slot online, €10.00 reduced with the same €5.00 supplement, €5.00 for schools and seminaries with a €2.00 supplement, and €12.00 at Castel Gandolfo.

Free entry applies on the last Sunday of every month, to children under 7, and to visitors with a disability from 67%. The ticket is valid only on the day it is issued and is not refundable, which is the clause that turns a missed morning into a ticket you cannot use tomorrow.

Buy at tickets.museivaticani.va and nowhere else. The museums sit in the territory of Vatican City while being physically inside Rome, so no Roman city pass and no Italian state museum card applies here, and reseller sites with similar names are a documented problem.

## The Trevi Fountain basin costs €2.00 now

Since February 2, 2026 access to the basin area of the Trevi Fountain has been charged to tourists and non residents: €2.00 per person. Entry runs 11:30 am to 10:00 pm on Mondays and Fridays and 9:00 am to 10:00 pm on other days, with last entry at 9:00 pm.

Free access covers residents of Rome and the metropolitan city with identification, children under 6, people with a disability and one companion, and licensed tour guides. Tickets are sold at fontanaditrevi.roma.it, at civic museums, at tourist information points, at authorized resellers, and on site by card only. After 10:00 pm the fountain stays visible and free.

The scale behind the decision: over 10 million visitors a year during the trial period, an average of 30,000 arrivals a day and peaks of 70,000. A limit of roughly 400 people at a time, run with stewards from 2025, is reported in the press and does not appear on the official page, so we do not state it as a rule.

## The Pantheon, at €7.00 since July

The full Pantheon ticket rose from €5.00 to €7.00 on July 1, 2026, under the April 10, 2026 agreement between the culture ministry and the diocese of Rome, with €2.00 for ages 18 to 25 and free entry under 18. It opens daily 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, last entry 6:30 pm.

Put the four sites in one column and the shape of a Rome day becomes clear: the Borghese fixes your afternoon, the Vatican fixes your morning, and the Pantheon and the Trevi are the flexible pieces between them.

Do the Borghese booking first. It is the only one of the four where a sold out turn cannot be worked around on the day.

## Does the Roma Pass cover any of this

The Roma Pass comes in two versions, 48 hours at €38.00 with one free museum or archaeological site entry, and 72 hours at €62.90 with two, both including unlimited travel on the urban transport network for their duration.

Against the list above, the honest answer is arithmetic. The Vatican Museums are not covered at all, being in another state. The Borghese and the Pantheon are Italian sites where a pass entry or a reduced rate can apply, and the Trevi basin ticket is a city charge with its own free categories.

The card also gives reduced rates elsewhere, discounts on exhibitions and free use of the P.stop toilet network, and comes as an app for iOS and Android or as a physical card from the Tourist Infopoints. Buy it if you are riding the metro daily and entering several paying sites; skip it for a walking trip with two bookings.
