Tropea is a comune of 5,668 residents on a rock above the Tyrrhenian that declared 109,552 overnight stays in July 2026 and 1,619 in January, so the month you choose decides which town you find.

## When to go: read the monthly curve

In 2026 Tropea declared 1,619 overnight stays in January, 2,703 in February, 4,988 in March, 25,178 in April, 71,614 in May, 97,681 in June and 109,552 in July. The seven months add up to 315,509 nights from 94,890 guests, with declarations updated to August 24, 2026.

The jump comes in April, when the figure multiplies fivefold on March, and by June the town is already close to its July level. If you want Tropea open but not full, April and May are the months the numbers point to.

August isn't in the series, because it hadn't been declared when the report was produced. So the busiest month of the year is the one missing from the table, and July is a floor, not the peak.

## Figures that undercount

The 315,509 nights are declarations for the tourist tax, not presences measured by the regional observatory. They leave out residents and any accommodation that failed to file, so the real presence is higher.

The old town stands on a rock the comune puts at about 60 metres, sheer above the Tyrrhenian, on the Costa degli Dei in the province of Vibo Valentia. The height is the comune's own figure, not a surveyed measurement.

ISTAT estimates 5,668 residents on January 1, 2026, while the comune's site gives 5,822 at December 31, 2024. The two dates differ, and this page uses the ISTAT one.

## The tourist tax, still at 2025 rates

Tropea charges €1 per night per star in hotels and holiday villages, €2 per night in rooms-to-let and B&Bs, and €1.50 per night in other lodgings, from campsites and agriturismi to holiday homes, hostels and boats moored in the port. It applies for at most 15 consecutive nights, and children under 12 are exempt.

These are the 2025 rates, set by the resolution of October 23, 2024, which confirmed rates in force since 2022. No 2026 resolution had been published by September 1, 2026, so treat them as the latest published rather than this year's.

## An onion named after the town

The Cipolla Rossa di Tropea Calabria has been an IGP since EU regulation 284/2008 of March 27, 2008, for three types: the spring onion, the fresh onion and the storage onion. The name is the town's, but the growing zone covers comuni in the provinces of Cosenza, Catanzaro and Vibo Valentia.
