URL: https://myitalia.it/unesco/in-emilia-romagna Last updated: 2026-09-03 Emilia-Romagna holds seven World Heritage properties in 2026, spanning thirty one years of inscriptions, from Ferrara in 1995 to the central Italian theatres added in 2026. ## The seven, oldest to newest The sequence: Ferrara, city of the Renaissance, and its Po delta, reference 733, in 1995; the early Christian monuments of Ravenna, 788, in 1996; Modena's cathedral, Civic Tower and Piazza Grande, 827, in 1997; the beech forests, 1133, in 2007; the porticoes of Bologna, 1650, in 2021; the evaporite karst and caves of the northern Apennines, 1692, in 2023; and the system of Italian style condominium theatres, 1762, in 2026. Two of the seven are shared. The beech forests reach into six other regions, and the theatre network is held jointly with Marche and Umbria. Three inscriptions in the last five years make this one of the fastest growing regional lists in Italy, and the growth has come from landscape and typology rather than from single monuments. ## Ferrara is mostly not Ferrara The 1995 property covers 46,712 hectares with a buffer zone of 117,649 hectares, and it includes the historic center, the walls, the Castello Estense, the cathedral of San Giorgio and the reclaimed farmland of the Po delta. Most of that surface is flat countryside, which is the part people never associate with the name. Ferrara is treated as the first city developed on a complete urban plan, the Addizione Erculea of Biagio Rossetti, and the delta behind it is treated as the same project continued into the landscape. The site was inscribed in 1995 and extended in 1999 with the delta, and the surface here is the post extension total. ## The Ghirlandina: 25 people every 45 minutes Modena's Ghirlandina tower stands 89.32 meters tall and has belonged to the UNESCO site with the cathedral and Piazza Grande since 1997. Visits are by booking only, in slots every 45 minutes with a maximum of 25 people, at €6.00 full and €4.00 reduced (2026). Opening runs 9:30 am to 7:00 pm from April to September and 9:30 am to 6:00 pm from October to March. The number of steps is not published on the official page, so it is not stated here. Twenty five people every 45 minutes is a hard ceiling. On a July weekend the slot, not the €6.00, is what decides whether you get up the tower. ## Ravenna: one ticket, four monuments out of eight The Ravenna Mosaici combined ticket costs €14.50 full, €11.50 reduced and €2.00 for children aged 6 to 10, free under 6 and for licensed guides. It covers the Basilica of San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo and the Neonian Baptistery. That is four of the eight monuments in the UNESCO listing. Sant'Apollinare in Classe and the Mausoleum of Theodoric are managed by a different body and carry separate tickets, which is the single most common planning mistake in Ravenna. Two of the four need a booked time band, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia and the Neonian Baptistery. Ticket desks are at Sant'Apollinare Nuovo and the Archbishop's Museum, with opening 9:00 am to 7:00 pm from March 8 to November 2, 2026.
