URL: https://myitalia.it/unesco/in-friuli-venezia-giulia Last updated: 2026-09-03 Four of the five World Heritage properties in Friuli-Venezia Giulia are serial sites the region shares with others, which leaves Aquileia, inscribed in 1998, as the only property that is entirely its own. ## What a count of five actually contains The five are: the archaeological area and patriarchal basilica of Aquileia, reference 825, inscribed in 1998; the Dolomites, 1237, in 2009, with Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige; the Longobards in Italy, 1318, in 2011, with Lombardy, Umbria, Campania and Puglia; the prehistoric pile dwellings of the Alpine arc, 1363, in 2011, with four other regions; and the Venetian defence works of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, 1533, in 2017, with Lombardy and Veneto. Four of the five are memberships in properties that stretch beyond the region. A visitor reading the number five will picture five destinations; the reality is one destination and four shares. Two of those memberships are not visits at all in the ordinary sense. Pile dwellings are archaeological deposits under water or under ground, and the Dolomite systems here are mountains rather than sites with a gate. ## Aquileia: 760 square meters of floor Aquileia has been World Heritage since 1998 as the archaeological area and patriarchal basilica. The mosaic floor exceeds 760 square meters, the largest early Christian mosaic in the West, laid between 313 and 320 under bishop Theodore. The basilica standing today was consecrated in 1031 under patriarch Poppo, its bell tower reaches 73 meters, and below are two crypts, the twelfth century Crypt of the Frescoes and the Crypt of the Excavations with more early Christian mosaic. One caveat on the mosaic figure: the foundation's own site did not respond and the UNESCO record answers with a 403, so the 760 square meters has no primary confirmation and is carried as reported. ## The ticket, and what it opens Entry to the basilica complex with the Domus of Titus Macer costs €12.00 for adults and €9.00 for groups of fifteen or more, free for school parties of at least fifteen. It covers the basilica with its fourth century mosaics, the ninth century crypt of frescoes, the north Theodorian hall, the baptistery with the Sudhalle, the bishop's palace and the domus. That is a full morning, not a stop. Hours as published by this channel run 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Saturday and noon to 6:00 pm on Sunday in March and October, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm on weekdays in April to September, and shorter in winter. Other sources show a 9:00 am summer opening, so verify near the date. The bell tower fare is not published. ## Cividale, inside a serial property Cividale del Friuli entered the World Heritage List on June 25, 2011 as a component of the serial property Longobards in Italy, Places of Power 568 to 774 AD, which brings together seven Italian locations: Cividale, Brescia, Castelseprio, Campello sul Clitunno, Spoleto, Benevento and Monte Sant'Angelo. The Cividale component is the Gastaldaga area with the Tempietto Longobardo and the monastery of Santa Maria in Valle, plus the remains of the episcopal complex, at via Monastero Maggiore 34. Opening runs 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, with tickets through Vivaticket.
