Lombardy holds 10 of Italy's 62 World Heritage sites in 2026, more than any other region, although 4 of the 10 are serial sites it shares with neighbouring regions.

## The ten, from 1979 to 2017

Lombardy's list spans 38 years, from rock engravings in an Alpine valley to Venetian fortifications.

| Site | Listed | Shared with |
|---|---|---|
| Rock art of Valcamonica | 1979 | none |
| Santa Maria delle Grazie with Leonardo's Last Supper | 1980 | none |
| Crespi d'Adda | 1995 | none |
| Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy | 2003 | Piedmont |
| Monte San Giorgio | 2003 | none |
| Rhaetian Railway in the Albula and Bernina landscapes | 2008 | none |
| Mantua and Sabbioneta | 2008 | none |
| The Longobards in Italy, places of power | 2011 | Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Umbria, Campania, Puglia |
| Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps | 2011 | Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Piedmont, Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto |
| Venetian works of defence | 2017 | Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia |

Tuscany and Veneto follow with 9 each. The ranking counts a shared site in every region it touches, so Lombardy's lead rests partly on four serial listings.

## Valcamonica: 140,000 figures over 8,000 years

The rock art of Valcamonica was listed in 1979 under criteria iii and vi, a year before the Last Supper. It counts over 140,000 symbols and figures engraved over more than 8,000 years.

The property measures 432.3 hectares, with a buffer zone of 1,018.23 hectares. It is a valley, not a museum: the figures are on the rock where they were cut.

## Crespi d'Adda: a village with free electricity

Crespi d'Adda, a frazione of Capriate San Gervasio in the province of Bergamo, was listed in 1995 under criteria iv and v as an exceptional workers' village of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that has survived substantially intact.

Cristoforo Benigno Crespi founded it and his son Silvio enlarged it. The village had multi-family houses with vegetable gardens, a clinic, a school, a theatre, a church, the owners' castle and a hydroelectric plant that supplied the houses with free energy.

## Mantua and Sabbioneta: 235 hectares, two opposite towns

Mantua and Sabbioneta were listed together in 2008 under criteria ii and iii, with a core zone of 235 hectares and a buffer of 2,330. The pairing is the point.

Mantua is a Roman city renewed in the Renaissance. Sabbioneta is an ideal city founded from nothing by the Gonzaga. One listing, two opposite answers to the same question of how to build a Renaissance town.

## The Last Supper: 15 minutes, 40 people

The Last Supper in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie has been on the list since 1980, and in 2026 the visit lasts 15 minutes per slot, with at most 40 people inside.

Arrive 30 minutes before your booked time, or you lose the entry. Of the ten sites, this is the one where the ticket, not the journey, is the hard part.

## Two of the nine Sacri Monti

Two of the nine Sacri Monti listed in 2003 are in Lombardy: Ossuccio, above Lake Como, and Varese. The other seven are in Piedmont.

The serial site has a core zone of 90.5 hectares and a buffer of 721.9, under criteria ii and iv. It is counted once in each of the two regions.
