# Molise has no UNESCO site. It has the tratturi

> Molise and Valle d'Aosta are the only regions with no World Heritage site in 2026. What Molise has instead: transhumance, Saepinum, Pietrabbondante.

Molise has no World Heritage site in 2026, one of only two Italian regions without one, but the transhumance that UNESCO lists as intangible heritage ran along its tratturi, and one of those droving roads passes straight through the Roman town of Saepinum.

## Zero sites, and the national park doesn't change that

Molise and Valle d'Aosta are the only two Italian regions without a World Heritage property in 2026. Every other region has at least one, even if only as part of a shared serial listing.

The near miss is instructive. Part of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park lies in Molise, and the park contains listed ancient beech forests, but none of the listed forests falls in its Molise portion.

A missing inscription is not missing heritage. It means the region's sites have to be found by name rather than by label.

## Transhumance: 2019, then ten countries in 2023

Transhumance entered UNESCO's representative list of intangible cultural heritage in 2019, on a nomination by Italy, Austria and Greece. In 2023 the file was extended to ten states: Albania, Andorra, Austria, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Romania and Spain.

UNESCO recognises two forms, horizontal transhumance across the plains and vertical transhumance in the mountains. In Italy it moved along the tratturi, the grassy droving roads.

You will read that Molise keeps the most extensive network of tratturi. None of the three official UNESCO pages names Molise or measures the tratturi, so that claim stays out of this page as fact.

## Saepinum: a Roman town where a tratturo met a road

The Roman town of Altilia-Saepinum at Sepino, in the province of Campobasso, stands at the crossing of the Pescasseroli-Candela tratturo and the road from the Matese massif down to the Tammaro plain. The crossing decided where the town was founded and how it was laid out.

Rome took the area in 293 BC, in the third Samnite war. Inside the walls you walk through 4 city gates, among them Porta Bojano and Porta Terravecchia, and past the forum, the basilica and the theatre.

The site opens every day from 8:15 am to 7:15 pm, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Since March 1, 2026 entry has been temporarily free because of works; the ordinary price is €10 full, €2 for ages 18 to 25 and free under 18, with a €20 annual card.

Two official pages disagreed on the price until the manager's own site explained the free period. When the works end, expect the €10 ticket to return.

## Pietrabbondante: the Samnite sanctuary at 1,000 meters

The Italic sanctuary of Pietrabbondante, at about 1,000 meters on Monte Caraceno, is the high point of Samnite architecture, built by the Samnites Pentri. Temple B and the theatre date from the late second to the early first century BC.

The first three rows of theatre seats keep their shaped backrests and armrests carved as lion's paws, and there are inscriptions in the Oscan language. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 8:45 am to 7:00 pm, at €6 full and €2 reduced in 2026.

## 12 state sites in eight towns

The state runs 12 places of culture in Molise, spread over eight towns: Campobasso, Castel San Vincenzo, Civitacampomarano, Gambatesa, Isernia, Pietrabbondante, Sepino and Venafro. Campobasso, Isernia, Sepino and Venafro each hold two.

That list is the practical map of Molise's heritage, with or without UNESCO. The length in kilometers of the Pescasseroli-Candela tratturo has not been verified on an official source, so no figure is given.

## FAQ

### Does Molise have any UNESCO World Heritage sites?

No. In 2026 Molise and Valle d'Aosta are the only Italian regions without one. Molise does take part in an intangible UNESCO listing, transhumance, inscribed in 2019 and practised in Italy along the tratturi, the grass droving roads that cross the region.

### Is Saepinum free to visit?

For now, yes. Since March 1, 2026 entry to the Altilia-Saepinum site at Sepino has been temporarily free because of works in progress. The ordinary price is €10 full and €2 reduced for ages 18 to 25. It opens every day, 8:15 am to 7:15 pm.

### What is a tratturo?

It is a wide grassy droving road used to move flocks between mountain and plain. The Pescasseroli-Candela tratturo runs straight through the Roman site of Saepinum, which was founded where it met the road from the Matese massif to the Tammaro plain.

### When is the Pietrabbondante sanctuary open?

Tuesday to Sunday, 8:45 am to 7:00 pm, closed on Monday, with tickets at €6 full and €2 reduced in 2026. Some secondary sites quote 10:15 am to 5:15 pm, probably winter hours; the manager's own page gives the longer timetable, and that is the one used here.
