Veneto counts nine World Heritage properties in 2026, three of them shared with other regions, and one province alone, Belluno, holds five of the nine mountain systems that make up the Dolomites.

## The nine, and the three that are shared

Veneto's list runs from Venice and its lagoon, reference 394, in 1987, through Vicenza with the Palladian villas, 712, in 1994, the botanical garden of Padua, 824, in 1997, the city of Verona, 797, in 2000, the Dolomites, 1237, in 2009, the prehistoric Alpine pile dwellings, 1363, in 2011, the Venetian defence works, 1533, in 2017, the Prosecco hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, 1571, in 2019, and Padua's fourteenth century fresco cycles, 1623, in 2021.

Three of those nine are transregional: the Dolomites, the pile dwellings and the Venetian defence works. The remaining six are Veneto's alone.

Nine is the sort of number that gets quoted as a ranking. What it actually describes is a region with a lagoon, a mountain range and four listed cities in it.

## The Dolomites: nine systems, four administrations

The Dolomites were inscribed on June 26, 2009 at the Seville session as a serial natural property of nine systems, spread across Veneto in the province of Belluno, Friuli-Venezia Giulia in Pordenone and Udine, and the autonomous provinces of Bolzano and Trento.

Managing a property split like that needed its own body. On May 13, 2010 the provinces and regions involved set up the Fondazione Dolomiti UNESCO, whose name carries four languages.

The total surface is not published on the official pages we could open, and the UNESCO record answers 403 to both a browser and a command line request, so no area figure appears here.

## Five systems in one province

Five of the nine Dolomite systems fall inside Veneto, and all five are in the province of Belluno: Pelmo-Croda da Lago, Marmolada, two portions of Pale-Dolomiti Bellunesi, and the Dolomiti Friulane.

That is why Veneto holds the largest share of the Dolomite property, and why a Dolomite trip planned from Venice is not the detour it looks like on a map.

Naming varies slightly between sources, with Pale di San Martino and Dolomiti Bellunesi appearing in different combinations. The version here is the one used by the Veneto regional authority.

## The Prosecco hills, listed for how they are farmed

The hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene in the province of Treviso were inscribed in 2019 as a cultural landscape, which means the farming is the heritage.

The distinctive element is the ciglioni: small vineyards on narrow grassy terraces without dry stone walls, alternating with woods, hedges, tree corridors and scattered villages. It is a mosaic rather than a monoculture, and that mosaic is the listed feature.

The bellussera belongs to the same landscape: a training system devised by the Bellussi brothers in the late nineteenth century against downy mildew, with wooden poles 3 to 4 meters high and crossed wires that draw a honeycomb across the slope, visible from above.

The number of comuni in the property and its inscribed surface are not published on the official pages, so neither is given. More in [Veneto](/regions/veneto), [the Dolomites](/nature/dolomiti) and [the Palladian villas](/attractions/ville-palladiane).

## FAQ

### How many UNESCO sites are there in Veneto?

Nine in 2026: Venice and its lagoon in 1987, Vicenza and the Palladian villas in 1994, Padua's botanical garden in 1997, the city of Verona in 2000, the Dolomites in 2009, the Alpine pile dwellings in 2011, the Venetian defence works in 2017, the Prosecco hills in 2019 and Padua's fourteenth century fresco cycles in 2021.

### When were the Dolomites listed?

On June 26, 2009, at the Seville session, as a serial natural property made of nine systems across Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the autonomous provinces of Bolzano and Trento. The managing Fondazione Dolomiti UNESCO was set up on May 13, 2010.

### How much of the Dolomites is in Veneto?

Five of the nine systems, all in the province of Belluno: Pelmo-Croda da Lago, Marmolada, two portions of Pale-Dolomiti Bellunesi, and the Dolomiti Friulane. That is the largest single regional share of the property.

### What are the ciglioni in the Prosecco hills?

Narrow grassy terraces carrying vines without dry stone walls, alternating with woods and villages. They are the distinctive feature of the Conegliano and Valdobbiadene hills, listed in 2019 as a cultural landscape in the province of Treviso.

### What is a bellussera?

A training system invented by the Bellussi brothers in the late nineteenth century against downy mildew, using wooden poles 3 to 4 meters high and crossed wires. It draws a honeycomb pattern across the vineyard that is visible from above and still in use in the listed hills.
