Rome operates 5 limited traffic zones with different timetables, and the historic center one is switched on Monday to Friday from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm and on Saturday from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

## Five zones, and the hours are not the same

The 5 zones do not share a schedule, which is the reason a single sentence about "the Rome ZTL" is always wrong somewhere. Public holidays are excluded from the daytime zones.

| Zone | Days | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Centro Storico | Mon-Fri | 6:30 am - 6:00 pm |
| Centro Storico | Saturday | 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm |
| Tridente | Mon-Fri | 6:30 am - 7:00 pm |
| Tridente | Saturday | 10:00 am - 7:00 pm |
| Trastevere, daytime | Mon-Sat | 6:30 am - 10:00 am |
| Trastevere and San Lorenzo, night | Wed-Sat | 9:30 pm - 3:00 am |
| Centro Storico and Testaccio, night | Fri-Sat | 11:00 pm - 3:00 am |

The night zones are suspended in August. The daytime ones are not, which surprises people who arrive expecting an empty city.

## Nothing stops you at the boundary

The 2026 mechanism is the same across Italian art cities: entry is allowed only to authorized vehicles in set time bands, the boundary is watched by cameras that read every plate, and the penalty is issued automatically to anyone driving through without a registered permit.

There is no barrier and no warning. Roma Capitale's mobility agency puts the Rome gate count at 50 plate reading cameras, a figure from a descriptive page that has never been reconfirmed.

With a rental car the charge sequence has two steps. The rental company bills an administrative fee for passing your details to the city, and that fee usually reaches your card before the fine itself arrives.

## The version of this problem you can delete

The Leonardo Express covers Fiumicino to Roma Termini nonstop in 32 minutes at €14 one way, every 15 minutes and every 30 in thinner bands, running 4:50 am to 11:05 pm from Termini and 5:38 am to 11:27 pm from the airport.

Termini sits outside every zone above. For a stay inside the walls, a car is a liability from the moment you collect it, and this is the connection that removes the need for one.

Mini group tickets are €40 for 4 people, a 10 ride carnet is €115, and one child aged 4 to 12 travels free with each paying adult. Prices are in euros.

## What is not fixed, and what we could not check

All 5 timetables above can change by temporary ordinance for events and works, and the source page carries that warning itself. Anything you read here is the standing timetable, not a guarantee for a specific Tuesday.

If your hotel sits inside a zone, the property registers your plate for the specific zone and time band. A permit for one zone does not cover another. See also [ZTL](/themes/ztl) for the other cities.

## FAQ

### What hours is the Rome city center ZTL active?

The Centro Storico zone runs Monday to Friday 6:30 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, with public holidays excluded. The Tridente zone works longer: Monday to Friday 6:30 am to 7:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.

### Are the Rome night ZTLs active in August?

No, they are suspended. In other months Trastevere and San Lorenzo run Wednesday to Saturday 9:30 pm to 3:00 am, and Centro Storico and Testaccio Friday and Saturday 11:00 pm to 3:00 am. The daytime zones stay on through August.

### What happens if I drive into a Rome ZTL by accident?

Nothing at the time, because there is no barrier. 1 of the 50 gate cameras reads your plate and the penalty notice is issued afterwards by post to the registered keeper. With a rental car the company also bills an administrative fee for handing over your details.

### How do I avoid the ZTL when arriving from Fiumicino?

Take the train instead of a car. The Leonardo Express runs nonstop to Roma Termini in 32 minutes for €14, every 15 minutes, from 5:38 am to 11:27 pm out of the airport. Termini is outside the restricted zones.
