Castel del Monte: the shuttle, the cap, the 45 minutes

Castel del Monte admits 120² people per time slot for a visit capped at 45 minutes, and the last stretch of road is covered by a paid shuttle, not by your own car.

The last kilometer is not yours to drive

Cars stop at the paid car park on the SS 170¹ and a paid shuttle service runs the rest of the way to the castle. That step surprises people who have planned the day around a rental car and a parking spot at the gate.

The price of the shuttle is not stated on the monument's page, so it is not quoted here. Carry cash for it and check at the car park.

Bari-Palese airport is 45 km away, and the A14 and A16 are the motorways that feed the area.

120 people a slot, 45 minutes on the clock

Admission is limited to 120² people per time band and the visit itself is capped at 45 minutes (2026). Both numbers are set by the site, not by a tour operator.

That combination is unusual for a castle in open country, and it is the practical reason to buy online in July and August: a full slot is a slot you cannot join.

45 minutes is also enough. The building is an octagon with eight towers and two floors, and it is not a place where you lose an afternoon.

Two seasons, two sets of hours

From October 1 to March 31 the castle runs 9 am to 5:45 pm with last entry at 5 pm. From April 1 to September 30 it runs 10 am to 6:45 pm with last entry at 6 pm (2026).

On Italian signs those read 09:00 to 17:45 and 10:00 to 18:45. The gates stay shut on December 25 and on January 1.

Note the shift in the morning: the summer timetable opens an hour later, not earlier, which is the opposite of what most travelers assume when planning an early start out of Bari.

€9, and the Trani ticket that costs €3 more

Entry is €9 full and €2 reduced (2026). A combined ticket with the castle at Trani costs €12 full and €3 reduced, and there is a museum card at €10. Prices are in euros.

Free entry covers EU citizens under 18, visitors with a disability and their companion, EU tour guides, Ministry of Culture staff, ICOM members, booked school groups, teachers and students of architecture, cultural heritage and art history, and tenured teachers with proof.

The €3 gap between the single ticket and the Trani combination is small enough that the decision is about your day, not your budget.

Without a car: Andria, then bus 6

Take the train to Andria and pick up ASA bus number 6, which runs every day from April 1 to November 1 and weekends only over the rest of the year.

Departures are at 9 am, 10 am and 2 pm, with returns at 2:30 pm, 4 pm and 7:30 pm. ASA answers on 0883¹ 292155¹, and the monument's own page tells you to check with them for current times.

Read that timetable against the 45-minute visit and the arithmetic is blunt: the 2 pm departure and the 4 pm return is a whole afternoon for 45 minutes inside, and there is nothing else out there.
