Bari's Swabian castle: €10, and Sundays close early

The Swabian castle in Bari costs €10 full and €2 reduced (2026) and opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 7 pm, except on Sundays between October and March, when it shuts at 1:30 pm.

Entry is €10 full and €2 reduced (2026). The castle belongs to the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Puglia, the Ministry of Culture branch for the region, which puts it inside the national scheme: the first Sunday of the month is free and runs on the full 9 am to 7 pm timetable.

The Sunday that ends at 1:30 pm

From October to March the castle closes on Sunday at 1:30 pm, four and a half hours earlier than on any other open day. The rest of the year and the rest of the week it runs 9:00 am to 7:00 pm (09:00 to 19:00 on Italian signs), closed Monday.

Last entry is one hour before closing, not the usual thirty minutes. On a winter Sunday that means the door effectively shuts at 12:30 pm.

1131, then Frederick II, then 1957

The castle dates from 1131² under Roger the Norman and was redesigned by Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century, which is where the name comes from. It was opened to the public for the first time in 1957 and restored again in 2017.

Eight centuries as a fortress, a prison and a barracks, and only seventy years as a place you can walk into. That late opening is the reason the interior reads as a shell with rooms rather than as a furnished palace.

The plaster casts of 1911

The gipsoteca holds casts of Apulian monuments made in 1911 by the sculptors Pasquale Duretti and Mario Sabatelli, and it reopened to the public in 2011 after decades out of sight.

Casts are usually the dullest room in a museum. Here they are the opposite, because they hold carved detail from portals and capitals across Puglia as those surfaces were a century ago, before the weather and the traffic got at them. The Norman basilica down the hill is at Basilica di San Nicola.

Getting here: 17 minutes from the airport

A Ferrotramviaria train covers Bari-Palese Karol Wojtyla to Bari Centrale in 17 minutes, on a station inside the airport grounds joined to the arrivals hall by a 300³ meter tunnel, running since 2013.
