Three stations, two stages, one price band

The line runs from Pontal d'Entreves at 1,300¹ m through the Pavillon du Mont Frety at 2,173¹ m to Punta Helbronner at 3,466¹ m. The standard return is €63 in high season and €59 in low, valid to November 1, 2026.

Two thirds of the height comes in the second stage. Anyone who has spent the week in Courmayeur at valley level arrives at the top station with no acclimatisation at all, and mild altitude sickness there is common and short.

Six other fares, and which one you want

The refundable return is €70 in high season and €66 in low, which buys a cancellation right rather than a different ride. A return to the Pavillon alone is €27 and €25.

A one-way to Punta Helbronner runs €46 to €49, the family ticket for two adults and two young people is €177¹, an early booking low season fare is €40, and a dog costs €15 to €16.

The Pavillon fare is the one to consider on a bad forecast. At 2,173¹ m you keep the botanic garden and the terrace and lose the summit view, at less than half the money.

The operator's own website is the weak point

One certificate error stands between you and the price list: the main montebianco.com site failed to open, and only the shop section, which is where the fares are actually published, could be read.

Buy through the shop pages rather than through a search result, and treat any third-party fare table as unverified. Nothing here is quoted from a reseller.

Gran Paradiso is the other high day out

Gran Paradiso reaches 4,061² m and is the only summit above 4,000² m lying entirely inside Italian territory, which is exactly what Mont Blanc is not. Its park holds 59 glaciers, 183² lakes, 168² vertebrate species and 553 km² of marked trails.

65% of those trails follow the royal hunting mule tracks, which is why the gradients are so even: they were laid out for a king on a mule. The symbol species is the ibex, and the reason it survived in Italy at all is this valley.

Why every station has a French name

French has been an official language of this region on an equal footing with Italian since the special statute of February 26, 1948, which is why the stations are called Pontal d'Entreves, Pavillon du Mont Frety and Punta Helbronner rather than anything Italian.

That is parity rather than minority protection, and it runs through the road signs and the paperwork as well as the cable car. Read the names as directions: they tell you which side of the massif you are on and which valley the ticket office expects you to come from.

The first national park in the country

Gran Paradiso was created in 1922 on the former Savoy royal hunting reserve and was the first national park in Italy, covering 71,044³ hectares across thirteen municipalities in the Aosta Valley and Piedmont. Fewer than 300³ people live inside the boundary.

Cable car and park answer two different questions. The Skyway sells 3,466¹ m in twenty minutes with a ticket; Gran Paradiso sells the same altitude band on foot over days, free at the gate. The castle at valley level is Fenis, the park has its own page at Gran Paradiso, and the region is at Valle d'Aosta.
