Lake Garda or Lake Como: how to choose

Choose Como for a short trip without a car, because its 145³ sq km fold into a shoreline that keeps the towns close together, and choose Garda for a longer stay, because at 369.98¹ sq km and 51.6 km¹ end to end it is a region rather than a lake.

The verdict in numbers

Read the altitude row before anything else: Garda's water sits 133 m lower than Como's, and altitude is the one climate variable in this table that nobody disputes.

The shape decides more than the size

Como packs 170 km³ of shoreline into a lake of 145³ sq km, while Garda encloses 369.98¹ sq km with only 158.4 km¹ of shore. Como has more coast on a lake less than half the size, and its sinuosity index of 3.98³ is the number that says so.

That is the practical difference between the two. On Como the three branches meet in the middle, so the towns on opposite shores are close across the water and long apart by road. On Garda the lake is 51.6 km¹ long and up to 17.2 km¹ wide, and the northern end and the southern end are separate trips.

If your holiday has a car, Garda's distances are manageable and its width gives you two genuinely different shores. If it does not, Como's folded geometry does the work for you.

Depth, volume and what they change

Como is the deeper lake on both measures: 410³ m at its deepest against Garda's 346¹ m, and 155³ m mean depth against 133.3¹ m. Among the large prealpine lakes it is the deepest, ahead of Maggiore at 370⁴ m; the wider claim that it is the deepest lake in Italy or Europe is not in any source we could read, so we do not make it.

Garda holds more than twice the water anyway: 49 cubic km against 22.5. A deep narrow lake and a big shallow one behave differently in summer, and the number you feel is the mean depth, not the record depth.

Garda's catchment covers 2,260¹ sq km and reaches 3,556¹ m, fed mainly by the Sarca and drained by the Mincio at a mean 58.4¹ cubic meters a second. An alpine catchment above a lake surface at 65 m is the reason the two ends of Garda sit in different landscapes.

Twenty-six years for Garda's water to turn over

Garda's theoretical water renewal time is 26.8² years, more than six times Maggiore's 4.1 years and Iseo's 4.2. Anything that enters the lake stays in the system for decades.

We have no equivalent figure for Como. The comparison is published for Garda, Maggiore and Iseo and simply does not include the Lario, so this row of the table stays empty rather than being filled by inference.

What this comparison cannot tell you

Three things are missing here: ferry fares, timetables and crossing times for either lake are not verified on any source we could read, and neither are visitor numbers by lake or hotel prices. Those are the three things people ask next, and we would rather say so than repeat a figure from an aggregator.

Also missing: any official depth for Garda that both institutions agree on. The Comunità del Garda publishes 346¹ m, the 2004 regional report publishes 350¹ m, and the discrepancy is unresolved. It is four meters and it does not affect your trip, but it tells you how solid the rest of the data is.

Pick Como if, pick Garda if

Pick Como if you have two or three nights, no car, and want to move by boat between towns that face each other across 145³ sq km of water. The folded shoreline is the product.

Pick Garda if you have a week, a car, and want variety inside one destination: a lake 51.6 km¹ long, 17.2 km¹ wide at its widest, sitting at 65 m above sea level with a 3,556¹ m catchment above it. Garda is the one that combines a beach afternoon with a mountain morning. Como is the one you can do without driving.
