Italian DOP and IGP wines: 522 in the EU register

Italy has 522 wine names protected in the EU register in 2026, 411 DOP and 111 IGP, more than any other member state: France follows with 440.

411 DOP, counted three times

The 411 figure has three matching sources: the agriculture ministry's section title, its numbered alphabetical list updated March 27, 2026, and the EU's eAmbrosia register.

When three counts made in different ways land on the same number, it's as solid as a count gets. That's worth knowing, because the split inside that 411 is softer, as the section below explains.

111 IGP, which Italian labels call IGT

The 111 IGP wines are the ones sold as IGT on Italian labels. The ministry titles its section with 111, its list updated May 19, 2026 numbers 111 entries, and eAmbrosia returns 111 Italian PGI wines.

Same pattern, same result. If a bottle says IGT, it's one of those 111 names, and in EU terms it is an IGP.

522 in all, and first in the EU

Together they make 522 protected wine names in 2026.

Counted country by country on the eAmbrosia register, Italy is first in the EU with 522, ahead of France with 440, Spain with 149 and Greece with 147. The ranking comes from querying the register's public interface directly, because its website doesn't load as readable pages.

Italy's lead over France is 82 names, much smaller than the distance between France and Spain. Two countries are far ahead of the rest, and the third is a long way back.

Inside the DOP: DOCG and DOC

Under EU law the 411 DOP wines include both Italian mentions: 79 DOCG and 332 DOC in 2026.

The EU sees one category where Italy keeps two. How the 79 and the 332 split by region, and why some sources still print older DOCG totals, is covered on wine denominations. The regions ranked by DOCG count are on wine regions by DOCG.

What it's worth

DOP and IGP wine was worth €11.04 billion at production in 2024, and exports of Italian wine indications brought in €7.19 billion that year.

Food DOP, IGP and STG came to €9.64 billion in the same year, so wine is the bigger half of the system by value. The wider picture is on Italy's DOP economy.

What the count means when you buy

522 is a count of rulebooks, not of producers or bottles. A name on the label tells you which of them the wine was made under, and it doesn't tell you who made it well.

That's the useful limit to keep in mind in a wine shop. The letters narrow the field; the producer's name is what you're actually choosing.
